Date and Time for Guru Purnima 2025
Date: Thursday, July 21, 2024
Purnima Tithi (Full Moon Phase): The Full moon day during the Ashadha month is known as Guru Purnima day. Traditionally, this day is reserved for Guru Puja or Guru Worship. On this day, disciples offer Puja or pay respect to their Gurus. A guru refers to a spiritual guide who enlightens disciples with his knowledge and teachings.
Significance of Guru Purnima
The word “guru” is derived from the Sanskrit words “gu” (darkness) and “ru” (remover), implying that a guru is someone who removes ignorance and enlightens us. Guru Purnima is celebrated to express gratitude towards these enlightened beings who impart wisdom and knowledge.
Historical Background
According to Hindu mythology, Guru Purnima is closely associated with the birth of a renowned sage, the son of Sage Parashar. It is believed that this divine child possessed profound knowledge, encompassing the realms of the past, present, and future (Bhoot Kaal, Vartamaan Kaal, and Bhiavishya Kaal). It marks the birth anniversary of Ved Vyasa, the sage who authored the Mahabharata and compiled the Vedas.
Traditions and Celebrations
1. Puja and Rituals: Devotees perform special pujas (prayers) and rituals to honor their gurus. This includes offering flowers, fruits, and sweets to their teachers.
2. Satsang and Discourses: Many spiritual organizations and ashrams hold satsangs (spiritual gatherings) and discourses where gurus impart wisdom and guidance to their disciples.
3. Charity and Acts of Kindness: It is common to engage in charitable acts and help those in need as a way of spreading the teachings of compassion and service.
4. Meditation and Reflection: Followers spend time in meditation and self-reflection, seeking to internalize the lessons taught by their gurus.
How to Celebrate Guru Purnima
1. Show Gratitude: Visit your guru or teacher, if possible, and express your gratitude. If a personal visit is not feasible, a heartfelt message or phone call can also convey your appreciation.
2. Read Scriptures and Spiritual Texts: Engage in reading sacred texts or books written by your guru to deepen your understanding of their teachings.
3. Practice What You’ve Learned: Apply the teachings of your guru in your daily life. This could include acts of kindness, mindfulness, and self-discipline.
