Planets give different phalas (results) in each of 27 Nakshtras (lunar mansions). This phala depends upon the quarter (charana) of nakshtras in which planet is placed and drishti (aspects) of other planets it receives. The beauty of Ravana Samhita is a planet in one pada will give bad results but in the very next pada of the same nakshatra it can give excellent results. This difference is subtly highlighted. Here is the translation of the 4^th Nakshatra, ‘Rohini’ from Ravan Samhita which is the fourth in this series of translations. Rohini asterism stretches from 40 degs to 53.20 of the natural zodiac.

Rohini Nakshtra

The Sun in Rohini

If the Sun is in Rohini and receives an aspect of the Moon, the subject will be very eager to serve woman. He makes money (wealth) through serving women. The native also earns wealth through transport and water (marine) related works.
Mars aspect on this Sun makes the subject expert in war and gives social respect as well as wealth.
Mercury’s aspect on the Sun confers wealth through fine arts.
Jupiter’s aspect ensures leadership position in society and benefits from political party in power. It also ensures respect and popularity for the native.
The aspect of Venus promises an elegant, attractive, sweet speaking (madhurbhashi) and a bright native with beautiful eyes who has friends and foes in equal numbers.
The Sun, having aspect of Saturn, ensures a lean and thin native who struggles for bread and butter and lives in a poor condition but gets malice feelings towards his wife.

Sun In Rohini Padas (Quarters)

First Pada

When the Sun is placed in first pada, the native will be smart and promising and always be selective about his clothing. The native makes money from livestock (elephants, horses, sheep, nanny-goats etc.) He serves people at large but suffers from sexual diseases.

Publishers Notes: We have only 2 charts of sexually transmitted diseases but of Sun in 2^nd pada of Rohini, not in 1^st pada as mentioned in the above verse, due to non-availability of a larger database it is difficult to verify the functionability of the verse.

Second Pada

When the Sun is placed in the second quarter of Rohini, the native will be content and powerful. He earns through trades in liquid, oil and ghee (clarified butter) items and never takes bath in an unknown river away from his house [Copy Editors Notes: maybe since native suffers from mrigi, a type of disease in which person gets sudden restlessness and collapses. The next lines indicate these phenomena]. The native has some diseases in which he repeatedly gets restlessness and collapses and suffers from disease like rise in Pitta level, Meningitis, headaches. Such a subject never attempts to swim in deep waters like river, lake or sea. The subject holds a position of an ‘Army Chief’ (Sena Pramukh), if Mars is present in this nakshtra.

Third Pada

When (the Sun) placed in third pada, the subject gets involved in philanthropic works and also gets benefited from such ventures. He may suffer from severe disease of hiccups (hichakiya lagane ka rog). The female natives suffer from the disorder of irregular menstruation cycles. The native suffers from hydrophobia (jala- bhaya).

Copy Editors Notes: Here another meaning may be ‘strongly’ considered, “The native must be alert about water source especially pond, lake, river as he may be lose his life through this source.

Fourth Pada

If the Sun is present in fourth pada, the native will be a government servant who has to travel frequently. He will be obedient to his wife. The male native treats woman as inferior to men.

Moon in Rohini

If the Moon receives Sun’s aspect, the subject will earn wealth through agriculture, tantra-mantra as well as through occult sciences.
The Subject finds strong attraction toward opposite sex but lives life in decent manner if the aspect of Mars is on the Moon. In such a situation (of planets) he is loved by his family.
Mercury’s drishti (aspect) promises a scholar native who is acquainted with lot of disciplines/subjects but gets his livelihood in the mid of his life.
Jupiter’s aspect (to moon) makes him religious and obedient of his parents (matru-pitru bhakta).
The aspect of Venus confers comforts of vehicles, home, ornaments, domestic animals etc.
Saturn’s aspect on moon denies the native (parents or motherland association) in childhood and ensures no gain from his father. [Here words in blue are added by translator/editor.]

First Pada

When the Moon is found in the first pada of Rohini, the native will be cheerful, sweet speach, virtuous and hardworking. He will make profits by trading in milk, jaggery (gud)-sugar, ghee, oil etc. The native will be affectionate towards his siblings but suffers from the disorders of ears, nose and teeth.

Second Pada

The Moon’s position in the second pada of Rohini signifies a native who faces interruption in education but gets special interest (inclination) in fine arts and music. Having a vicious and complex situation, such a native will change residence frequently. In female nativity, this equation confers a loss making personality who may involve unethical or immoral works also.

Third Pada

Having the Moon in the third pada of Rohini confers a native with a happy life and earns livelihood from business related to women. He makes sufficient money with trade of water or other fluid items. Such a native may be blessed with outstanding and consistent personality with strong memory but often suffers from diseases of throat and eyes.

Fourth Pada

The Moon’s placement in the fourth pada of Rohini reveals one who is making money (wealth) in the business of gems and jewellery. Some of the subjects may earn their livelihood through offering their services in the field of pilgrim’s places, milk, grocery and medicine. Such a female native owns a pile of jewellery and clothes. A few (woman) may have luxurious vehicles as well as servants also but suffers from disorder in menstruation cycles, pain in limbs and headache (Shiroshul).

Mars in Rohini

The Sun’s aspect on Mars reveals a native who resides in forests or a hilly area and will not be able to give contentment to his wife and his family.
The Moon’s aspect indicates a native who hates his mother and makes friendship to women of lower grade.
Mercury’s aspect makes one a scholar and a religious native who will have eye-catching personality but ill tempered by nature.
Jupiter’s aspect suggests one who lives with his close relatives and supports them financially.
With Venus’s aspect on mars, the native gets political post and becomes famous.
Saturn’s aspect indicates a scholar and a pure hearted native who heads several social foundations.

First Pada

When Mars is placed in the first pada of Rohini, the native is fond of musical instruments but maybe prone to diseases of glands.

Second Pada

Mars occupying the second pada and conjoining with Sun ensures a person who becomes a soldier but makes wrong decisions at times (word used is durbudhi, akin to Rahu Mer conjunct). He suffer from nose and ear diseases.

Third Pada

Mars placed in third pada indicates a patient native who will be felicitated by scholars but faces the agony of death of his progeny and immense trouble through his wife. He may suffer tissues degradation and throat diseases.

On purpose a female chart is used, it is of American actress Loni Anderson having Mars in 2^nd pada of Rohini she was married to Actor Burt Reynolds & after 6 yrs of marriage on January 1994, they entered a bitter divorce battle claiming a dozen years of abuse at the hands of Reynolds as his lover, and, later, his wife, while Reynolds in turn flaunted his extramarital affair and accused her of being a lousy mother.

Fourth Pada

Mars is in fourth pada confers an unstable but wealthy native who spends money on liquor and beauties and makes contact with bad folks. If subject is placed in government service, he earns money through unethical means. He will be a smuggler and will deal in drugs.

Recently on some forum a chart was raised of a mafia don belonging to the infamous Gambino family crime network who was sentenced to prison, the chart was of Louis Ferrante who in prison studied various religions then turned a religious leader of sorts and whose book is a best seller we are told. His birth time was not known we wrote to Mr Ferrante and got his time of birth which he quotes is as per his birth certificate. His Chart shows us maybe a different way of looking at the above verse.

As per the text Mars should be in the 4^th pada of Rohini to be a smuggler or earn through unethical means but here we have Mer in the 3^rd pada of Rohini but direct aspect of Mars on Mer and also on Mers sign Gemini. Incidentally the text at the start of Mars in Rohini mentions that ‘Mercury’s aspect on Mars makes one a scholar and a religious native who will have eye-catching personality but ill tempered by nature.’ The native did become religious by studying all religions in prison and a scholar at that and also a smuggler. One may additionally check below the result for Mer in 3^rd phala, this seems to have happened in Louis Ferrante’s life.

Mercury in Rohini

If Mercury receives the Sun’s drishti, the subject will be poor and weak but he would take interest in helping others.
When Mercury has an aspect of Moon, the subject will be laborious and wealthy. He gets benefits from government.
Aspect of Mars signifies one who gets money from rich persons but has to face inauspicious phalas in dasa and antardashas of Saturn.
Jupiter’s drishti indicates a affluent and great scholar who becomes head of the city.
Venus in aspect to Mercury in Rohini reveals a subject who always wears best clothes, has a tendency to show-off and got an attraction towards opposite sex.
Saturn’s aspect to Mercury creates a lot of psychological problems and the native faces humiliations in the hands of family as well as outsider. Even his wife doesn’t respect him.

The 3^rd stanza above says that if Mer is in Rohini and aspects by Mars then gets money from rich but has to face bad results in main & sub periods of Saturn. Let us take few charts with some variations in it for better understanding.

Chart: Johnson, Mark Erick

American thief, given ten years prison sentence for burglary. He entered prison 2/16/1991.

Note Mer and Mars both are in Rohini thereby forming sambhanda (association) as per Ravana Samhita, which means his Saturn periods should be bad. On 26^th Feb 1991 when he entered prison for 10 years he was running Saturn/Saturn dasa.

Chart: American Actress Yasmine Bleeth

American actress, pleaded guilty 11/30/2001 in Detroit to a charge of cocaine possession. A charge of driving while impaired followed in an incident on 9/12/2001 in Romulus, MI. She was sentenced to two years probation and drug screenings.

One may note what was written earlier in Louis Ferrantes case on drugs and Rohini, see here again Mer is in Rohini and Mars aspects it, so during Saturn periods one needs to be careful as per Ravana Samhita, on 12^th Sept 2001 when the incident happened she was running the unpredictable Jup/Ven dasa and Ven is closely conjoined with Saturn and Venus being a benefic will absorb Saturns malifecianse and Ven antar gave results of Saturn. One must also note that Venus Saturn together especially in enemy sign can give scandals, here Ven Saturn aspects the 3H of driving and Mars our highlighted planet as per above verse of Ravana Samhita is in 4H of vehicles, she was caught while driving.

Chart: Carlota, Empress of Mexico

Belgian royalty, the daughter of King Leopold I. She married Archduke Maximilian of Austria at 17. Ambitious and restless, she was delighted when her husband was offered the throne of Mexico 5/28/1864. As the Empress of Mexico, she worked enthusiastically with Mexican affairs in spite of various political and social obstacles. Returning to Europe to seek aid, Carlotta had a total breakdown, going mad on 10/07/1866. Kept in seclusion, she never knew that Maximillian was executed in 1868. She died 1/19/1927, 7:00 AM in the castle of Boechout at Neise, near Brussels.

Note both Mars and Mer are in Rohini thereby forming a relationship as per Ravana Samhita, for an Empress to go mad is a big thing and it happened on 7^th Oct 1866 when Mars/Moon was operative & this means the Mars dasa was havoc in her life, the text speaks about aspect of Mars on Mer & here Saturn aspects the mahadasa lord Mars who is with Mer. Saturn aspects the MD & AD lord both.

First Pada

Mercury placed in the first pada of Rohini indicates an intelligent and sweet spoken native who mostly earns money through writing and philanthropic works. He will get a shiny and modest wife but experiences trouble in speaking when gets excited.

The above Italian writer of 8 books on children & has also appeared in over 20 films. One can note as per Ravana Samhita she has Mer in 1^st pada of Rohini and this Mer is with 5L Saturn of authorship with A10 of career.

Though one gets around 126 authors from database with Mer in Rohini (all padas) but let’s take a controversial chart where the owner of the chart when contacted refuses to give her birth data for personal reasons but a chart which has often been debated.

Here the issue of the ascendant and this write up is not about determining the Asc of this writer and philanthropic (pls note the Ravana Samhita says the native earns from writing and philanthropic works, here the native is instead philanthropic)

Some British websites have quoted a time of 2 pm, where Rohini nak is in the 8H and there is placed Rahu in Rohini, the lord of Rohini is Moon and the favoured asterism of Moon God, Moon means creativity and Rahu means spirits, wizards, it is with 3L of writing Jupiter who is the nasargik lord of Publishing, all this drama happening in the 8H of occult, her Harry Potter is nothing but all the above and incidentally her Rahu dasa ran from 1988 to 2006 when she became one of the richest women in the world due to her Rahu Rohini writing. Though here Mer is not posited in Rohini but maybe it makes us think more on Rohini and as a nakshatra which brings out writing ability we guess.

Second Pada

When Mercury is in second pada of Rohini, the subject becomes well-known for his commentary of Vedic literature but he also takes part in politics prominently. He faces disappointments from his siblings and also suffers from diseases of anal and sexual organs weaknesses.

Third Pada

Mercury placed in third pada of Rohini confers a strong willed but mild wealthy subject who may always be engaged in carnal and materialistic pleasures. Such a native’s behaviour may also be controversial and immoral.

Fourth Pada

An individual will get benefit with the remote relations whereas bears loss of physical injuries (due to enemies) and miseries of one of his sister, when Mercury is situated in the fourth pada of When Saturn aspect such Mercury then the diseased and teeth less native will have an ugly appearance and will lack mental peace and get agony.

Jupiter in Rohini

When Jupiter is in Rohini & receives an aspect from the Sun, the native works as Chief of Army staff position and gets an honour (may be in the form of some medal) from authorities. He may get physical injury in the situation of warfare.
Aspect of Moon (to Jupiter) makes him fortunate and he help others a lot.
Mars’s aspect indicates good progeny and beautiful wife.
The Subject will take an active part in politics and will earn enormous wealth, if Jupiter has an aspect of Mercury. He will have charming personality and good appearance and will contribute a lot for the development of arts and culture.
When Jupiter receives an aspect from Venus, the native becomes wealthy by trading and serves / helps the poor. Such a person will be fortunate.
Saturn’s aspect ensures a rich native who will be a minister/prominent political leader or will head some eminent social organization.

First Pada

Jupiter placed in the first pada of Rohini indicates one who takes interest in philosophical and mythological discipline, behaves and believes in truth and always keeps a good company around himself. With a natural leadership quality, he will get popularity among women and enough pleasure from wealth and children. But he will suffer from blood and respiratory disorders.

Second Pada

Fourth Pada

The native may face a mishap at the age of 40.

Venus in Rohini

The Subject earns money through the business of ladies articles, if Venus receives aspect of the Sun. He will be satisfied with all amenities like vehicles, servants, wealth etc but will face difficulties in his marital life.
The Moon’s aspect on Venus ensures a subject who earns through dealing of gems-jewellery. Although he may be involved in carnal/material pleasures, but will be saviour of his family.
If Venus has an aspect of Mars, the subject earns money from notorious and unethical means.

If it be chart of a female native the subject gets a rich and accomplished husband.

Saturn in Rohini

If Saturn in Rohini receives the aspect of the Sun, the native may live on other’s money.
When Saturn has Moon’s aspect, the subject will be healthy and will work as a secondary authority.
With the aspect of Mars on Saturn, the native may be charming but loquacious.
When Mercury has drishti on Saturn, the native will have bad temper and surrounded with bad people.

This chart belongs to a beloved friend, two verses from above are applicable a) If Saturn in Rohini is aspected by Mars person is talkative but loquacious & b) Saturn in Rohini aspected by Venus indicates one who earns money through the trading of gold and silver i.e. jewellery business.

He trades in gold and is a jeweller by profession, though Venus does not directly aspect Saturn but there is sambhanda (association) of Saturn & Venus by exchange and trinal aspect as per Parasara. The other part of Saturn being aspected by Mars is perfect in his case as he is a known charmer and is famous among his friend circle to charm policemen to sanyasis, his hobby is to meet sanyasis from around India and often charms them so much that the phrase ‘They Eat From His Hand’ is 100% applicable on him.

First Pada

Saturn in the first pada of Rohini indicates one who may be religious but fond of gambling. Such a native spends/loses a lot of money in his young age but gets peaceful life after the age of 45. He may suffer from Tuberculosis and may lose teeth prematurely if not takes care of his life style.

Second Pada

Saturn placed in Rohini’s second pada indicates a scholar native who is attractive and sweet-spoken. But such a native suffers from the throat and blood related disorders and may undertake a surgery on his stomach. He will be bald.

Third Pada

Saturn placed in third pada ensures a subject who becomes scholar in an early age. He will earn money, name and fame due to knowledge of classic language and literature. He gains fame also through research work. Such a native will be intelligent and well-spoken but will suffer from dental and common cold (pratishyaya) diseases.

Fourth Pada

The subject earns money through the business of livestock, if Saturn is placed in fourth quarter. Though he wears fashionable and attractive clothes but is not skilled in his work. Due to his superior financial condition he enters into politics and gets power immediately. He becomes minister after the age of 50 but later half of his life becomes miserable due to health problems. Such a native suffers from disorders of eyes and throat. Sometimes paralysis or gastro-intestinal disorders may also be occurred.

Rahu in Rohini

First Pada

Rahus presence in the first pada of Rohini ensures a bold but lean & thin shaped subject who loves to eat heavily and suffers from acidic and indigestion problems. Though he will have weak eyes but will get long life. If ascendant also is in this pada, then Rahu protects him at each and every step in life.

Comments: It is noteworthy of it being mentioned that if ascendant is also in the 4^th Pada of Rohini along with Rahu then Rahus protects at every stage of life whereas most astrologers have always derided Rahus presence in Asc.

Second Pada

Rahu in the second pada of Rohini indicates a strong willed native who earns money through business and achieves fame and success also. Such a native will be patient and bold but due to his heavy eating habits; he may suffer from gastro-intestinal disorders. He may have weak eyes also.

Third Pada

The subject will be dependent on others for his survival, if Rahu is present in third pada of Rohini. Such a low intellect subject depends on others and gets only 65 years lifespan. He will lose his life due to accident, blood disorder or diabetes.

Fourth Pada

Rahu being in the fourth quarter makes the subject a creator and aficionado of literature. He earns livelihood via intellectual functions. Such a subject will be known as a scholar even if he has less education and low intellect. He works very hard but gets late results in life.

Ketu in Rohini

First Pada

The native earns a livelihood by living away from his birth place, if ketu is present in first pada of Rohini. A lot of time he will depend on others to give him food & sometimes takes food that he gets from charity (dana), and he will only live 65 years. Such a subject may be dumb or blind.

Second Pada

The native will have short lifespan if Ketu is placed in second pada of Rohini. If Jupiter has an aspect on Meena (Pisces Sign) or Moon, then he will not live above 20-25 years. His body and eyes will be weak in childhood. Such a subject may be handicapped or leper.

Third Pada

Ketu placement in the third pada indicates a professor, monk or priest. The native will have large family and he spends a happy life up to the 30^th After this age his struggle starts and he faces troubles from his wife and also suffers from incurable diseases.

Fourth Pada

The subject will be a scholar of logic(s)al sciences and master of Vedic- Shastras. He finds an inclination towards occult and ‘Mantra Shastra’. Person becomes successful in Ayurveda or traditional medical therapies. Defects like stammering, dumbness or blindness may occur in such a subject.

The interesting & common factor that one observes is Ketu in Rohini has not been extolled by the Ravana of Ravana Samhita and in every pada blindness or weakness of the eyes is mentioned apart from other issues of health.

Chart: Czssatt, Mary Stevenson

American artist of the Impressionist school, a master of the tender touch, her portrayals of gentle kisses are serene and voluptuous. An invalid in her later years, she was almost blind after 1910. She died 6/14/1926, Le Mesniel-Theribus, France. One can observe her Ketu is in Rohini 4^th pada as prescribed by our revered manuscript.

Same is the case with Joyce James, suffered from poor eyesight all of his life, Joyce wrote in large script and still had difficulty reading his writing. By 1930, he had undergone almost 25 ophthalmic operations. His data is 2^nd Feb 1882 , 6.24 am, Dublin, Ireland with Ketu in 2^nd pada of Rohini & 13 Sg Asc.

One or Two examples do not prove a point, researchers in astrology should collect more data and test it vigorously for a dictum to emerge out. The intention of this space is not to show dictums but to translate Ravana Samhita for English reading audiences and demonstrate it with some examples to initiate genuine & deep interest in further probing on nakshatra padas.
