While Vimsottari dasa and similar systems of event-timing provide strong foundations for predictions in Jyotish, an astrologer finds him or herself striving for greater accuracy than dasas alone can provide.  Some Jyotishis consider transits to dasa and sub-period rulers for these purposes for more accurate event-timing, while still others study Varshaphal or Tithi Pravesh chakras for fine-tuning the occurrence of events.  Still, even after applying these methods, a prediction timed to the day of actual occurrence is a rare achievement for even the most seasoned astrologer.

Progressions of planets by certain increments, however, are worth a careful consideration by astrologers as experience holds that their use within the larger framework of Vimsottari and other dasas enable very precise event-timing and prediction.   Progression in this context means that planets, as well as the ascendant/descendant and Midheaven/IC axes move forward (or backward) in time.  There are different systems of progression, some of which are said to belong to western astrology primarily, but those demonstrated in this paper concern the movement of the planets and key axis points by x-degrees = one year of time at different increments.  Clues as to these methods appear in Nadi writings such as Brighu Nadi and Chandra Kala Nadi, whereas there are indications from very old texts such as Manu Smriti of the progression of the Sun (and other planets/points) at a rate of 1 degree = 1 year of time.  As the following examples will indicate, these tools provide an impressive degree of accuracy when such progressed planets conjoin natal planets, especially those that rule or are connected to the rulers of operative dasas.

Definition of Time

Time is defined as the linear progression of the state of being, divided into various cycles and sub-cycles.  There are, however, different time sequences relating to human beings on earth, as opposed to those relating to gods and goddesses on higher planets.  According to the Manu Smriti, a significant principle emerges along these lines.  That is, that one year of human life is the equivalent of 1 day of the gods.

The Sun’s movement demarcates the movement of time.  In the course of his regular transit the Sun moves through twelve signs of the zodiac in one year, and thus one sign of the zodiac in one month, and one degree per day.  A year is thus defined as a Samvatsara, or the time taken for the Sun to transit 360 zodiacal degrees.

• The Sun’s movement at 1 degree per day is equivalent to 1 year of time, based on the above principle from Manu Smriti. This principle is the basis of all the progression systems demonstrated in this paper.

Progressing not only the Sun, but all planets and points in a chart at the rate of 1 degree = 1 year is highly useful in seeing events manifest.  In this regard it is important to note that the maximum longevity of human beings in the Kali-yuga is 120 years.  If the Sun is progressed at this rate, then one full naksatra Paryaya (that is, completion of the first 9 naksatras in the 27 naksatra belt) shall have been completed by the age of 120.  Thus, at the beginning of 120, or 120 years according to these progressions, the first of three Gandantas (death-inflicting naksatra padas) occurs.  Since all of life’s possibilities are based on the life-span, and since the Sun generates life, consciousness, and the progress of the Atma generally, the incremental movement of the Sun at one degree per year is a highly significant symbolism in Jyotish.  We shall see how this symbolism also translates into a very reliable tool in forecasting events.

Progressions of Planets by Divisions or Vargas

In a similar way, the planets of the natal chart, including Ascendant/Descendant and Midheaven/IC axes, may be progressed at a rate of 1 Navamsa per year, or other divisions per year.  For instance, since marriage is a typical usage of the Navamsa chart, the 1 Navamsa = 1 year progression sequence can be very helpful in timing marriage.  If Venus or other planet represents the potential for marriage in the natal chart, then progressing relevant planets [that is, planets relating to the 7^th house, Venus, 7^th house cusp, Moon, Darakaraka or ruler of the Upapada lagna, etc.] at a rate of 1 Navamsa (3˚20” of arc) = 1 year of time to the position of Venus, the event of marriage can take place during the corresponding year.

Similarly, in order to time specific events suggested by natal planets, progression at the rate of x-varga or division = 1 year to such planets may be considered. As another example illustrates, if in someone’s chart Jupiter indicates the possibility of birth of a child, then progressing relevant natal planets or house cusps at the rate of one Saptamsa (4˚17’) = 1 year of time, up to natal factors relating to childbirth may indicate the date the child takes birth, or when conception can take place.

It may be noted here that 1 division as per a specific varga chart, is equivalent to one sign/house of that varga chart.  Some astrologers thus will find the year an event takes place by progressing each house at a rate of 1 sign = 1 year, from the significator of the event (Venus for marriage in Navamsa, or Jupiter for children in Saptamsa), and finding the most likely house (and therefore year of life) of the varga chart wherein the event is suggested.  In this research paper, however, the progressions of 1 degree or varga = 1 year are observed mostly with reference to natal planets, although simultaneously operative dasa periods may suggest the event in related varga charts as well.

Calculations of Progressions

If it is sufficient to know the occurrence of an event by the above methods to only a year of accuracy, then one may simply count the number of degrees intervening between one planet and the planet or point it is progressed to, and divide this by the progression increment being used to get the number of years to be counted from the date of birth.

For example, suppose the ascendant of a child’s chart is at 1 degree of a sign and a powerful malefic is at 1 degree of the next sign (30 degrees away). Progressing at the rate of 1 Navamsa = 1 year, 30 divided by 3.33 degrees will progress the ascendant to that malefic at the native’s age of 9 years.  The native may suffer health or other physical problems during this year.  Similarly, progressing the ascendant in this example by 1 degree = 1 year, the native would encounter similar troubles at the age of 30 (30 divided by 1 = 30).

If more fine-tuned predictions are needed, then count the number of degrees and minutes of a planet or point to the

degree and minute of planets/points that it is being progressed to.  Then, divide the number of degrees and minutes by the progression increment in order to find the years, months, and days to be counted from the date of birth.  Use of computer programs for these purposes makes precise timings even easier.

Progressions of Additional Points – 64^th Navamsa, Brighu Bindu, and Mrityu-Bhaga

In Jyotish, various important points in a chart are relevant to the outcome of events, and these also may be considered with respect to progressions as described above.  Planets and house cusps may be progressed to such points, or the points themselves may be progressed to other relevant parts of the chart at x-division = 1 year for fine-tuning predictions.

The 64^th Navamsa

The 64^th Navamsa is found exactly 8 signs, or exactly 210˚ away from either the ascendant or Moon Navamsa.  For example, if the ascendant falls at 2˚ of Libra, the 64^th Navamsa falls at 2˚ Taurus (that is, the 64^th Navamsa is between 0˚ and 3˚20’ Taurus).  Similarly, if the Moon were at 14˚ Scorpio, then the 64^th Navamsa therefrom falls in 14˚ of Gemini (the 64^th Navamsa thus would be between 13˚20’ and 16˚40’ of Gemini).  These fall in the 4^th house from the Moon or lagna in the Navamsa chart.  The 64^th Navamsa from other planets, or even houses, may be considered also in this case.

The 64^th Navamsa, as well as the 22^nd Drekkana (exactly 8 signs away from the Rising Drekkana, or 8^th house of the Drekkana chart) are called Khara, and are very malefic points in the horoscope if conjoined or aspected by malefics, either natally, in transit, or by progression.

• Very challenging events occur to a person when malefics Saturn, Mars or Rahu/Ketu transit or progress in the 64^th Navamsa, either from the lagna, Moon, or other significator planets. For example, if Ketu is in the 64^th Navamsa from the Moon (natally or by progression), one may lose his mother; or when in the 64^th Navamsa from Venus, one loses his spouse, etc.

• Progressions (especially 3˚20” = 1 year) of natal Moon, Sun, or ascendant lord to the 64^th Navamsa from malefics, can bring tragedy or danger; or, malefics placed in the 64^th Navamsa from these or other planets and significators, will bring danger when progressed to the natal ascendant, Sun, or Moon. The results will be especially significant when the Dasa/bhukti periods of the same planets are in progress. 

• Benefics transiting in the 64^th Navamsa, or progressed to the 64^th Navamsa from a significator planet, will bring beneficial results pertaining to such planets such as marriage (Venus or Darakaraka), birth of children (Jupiter or Putrakaraka), rise in position, meeting one’s guru, etc.

Ground-breaking research has been carried out by the late C.S. Patel in the area of 64^th Navamsas, Navamsa = 1 year progressions, Brighu Bindu, and many less known Jyotish techniques found only in occult Nadi literatures.  It is thus well worth the effort of any serious student of Jyotish to read all of Sri Patel’s books on these subjects.

The Brighu Bindu is the degree midpoint of the Moon and Rahu, and is a very important point in delineation.  The BB is mentioned in the Chandra Kala Nadi, as well as Brighu Nadi.  Midpoints of Rahu and other planets, or of Ketu and the planets, will also carry great significance so far as the nature of those planets is concerned.

• Benefic and malefic transits to the BB will bring dramatic corresponding events into the life of the native. The trine positions of the BB are also sensitive points, as are the 64^th Navamsas from them.

• Progressions to the BB points, or its trine and opposition point, will bring specific events into the native’s life for good or ill, depending on the benefic/malefic nature of planets or points being progressed.

• For specific timings of events with respect to the BB point, the progressed Midheaven/IC axis may be noted carefully.

• Find the sign of the BB point, and make this the first year of life (age 0 to 1). Then progress this one sign per year.  When the year representing the progressed sign comes to a natal yoga (for good or ill), then in that year significant events occur.  Make note of the conjunctions and aspects to the sign for a given year, as well as transits that may be occurring to it simultaneously.

• Transits of planets to the BB point (including the midpoints of Rahu/Ketu and other planets in addition to the Moon) will be especially significant during dasa/bhukti periods of the nodes, or during their bhukti periods within the planet forming the midpoint.

• For example, transits to the 64^th Navamsa from the Moon/Rahu midpoint, or progressions of benefics/malefics to the BB point or its Navamsa, will be very significant during the Maha-dasha of the Moon, and bhukti period of Rahu, or vice versa.

• Dashas and bhukti periods of planets in the naksatra of Moon/Rahu, or other planets/Rahu, will also tend to bring significant events and experiences.

Mrityu Bhaga

• Specific degrees for each of the nine grahas including the ascendant and Mandi bring death when activated by malefic transits and/or dasha periods. These are called Mrityu Bhagas, or death-inflicting degrees. The MB degrees for each of the planets and the ascendant differ for their placement in different signs, and are shown in the table which follows.

• Note which planets, if any, are in MB degrees in the natal chart. Then, note the progression of that planet to natural malefics, especially Saturn, Mars, and Rahu.  These are the times when the native will fall into danger, and very possibly he will die at such times if the term of longevity has expired.  Also watch the progression of natural malefics to the MB degree.

• The 64^th Navamsa from the planet in its MB degree should be watched very closely when the dasa/bhukti of that planet is in operation, and when malefics transit to that Navamsa. Considerable troubles and challenges of a karmic nature may come to the native at such times.

Although the Mrityu Bhaga degrees for the various planets and the ascendant in the different signs are given by modern Jyotish computer programs the following table will provide an easy reference:

Notes on the Use of Outer Planets – Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto

Traditional Vedic astrologers typically exclude the use of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, as for the most part they are not included in the most reputable classical literatures on Jyotish.  However, in recent years, serious researchers in Jyotish have found reference to these in Nadi literatures, specifically Vasishta Nadi, and in some other places as well.  Putting prejudices and dogmas aside, this author chose to research the natal, transiting as well as progressed affects of these planets and has found a remarkable occurrence of events when they interact with key chart positions.

Some keywords on the nature of these planets may be noted as follows:

• Uranus: separating, sudden or abrupt action, and awakening consciousness.  The Tattva (gross element) is akin to Vayu, or air;

• Neptune: diffusive and dissolving three-dimensional structures, inclining to death, endings and completion; it awakens intuitive and spiritual realizations.  The Tattva is akin to Jala, or watery, but more along the lines of the sign of Pisces (subtle, intuitive or perceptive, and diminishing).

• Pluto: intensification of life challenges, transformative, changes in collective consciousness, death and re-birth and broad or far-reaching changes both personally and collectively. The Tattva is akin to Jala, or watery, but more along the lines of the sign of Scorpio (intense, penetrating, and unyielding).

While these planets move very slowly and thus rarely interact directly with natal planets in the course of a lifetime by transit, they will much more frequently contact such planets or points in the natal chart by progression.  This will especially be true in the case of more subtle divisional progressions, such as Navamsa and higher.  For example, the progression of Neptune by one Vimsamsa (1°30’) = 1 year sequence to the 9^th lord, Ketu, or Atmakaraka, may bring very significant spiritual events in the life of the native.  Similarly, progressing Pluto at the rate of one Trimsamsa (1°) per year to the ascendant or 8^th lord or Saturn, as well as MC/IC axis, the timings of death or life-altering experience may occur.

Angular Cusps (Asc./Des. as well as MC/IC) as Time Markers of Key Events

The 1^st/7^th, as well as 4^th/10^th cusps are pivotal in timing events, and they can also be progressed according to sequences suggested above. It is found by experience that major challenges, transition and life changes occur when this points progress to important natal factors.  These cusps are so sensitive to planets and natal positions that the birth time can be rectified based on their exact progressed conjunction to natal planets and cusps.  Typically the Midheaven (10^th house) cusp and the IC (4^th house cusp) move approximately at a rate of 1° of arc in 4 minutes of time.  Thus if an event occurs when such cusps progress to a position of less than 1° of arc conjunction with a natal planet or point, then the birth time can believed to be fairly accurate. If not, then the birth time can reliably be adjusted more or less than the given time, at the rate of 1° of arc equals 4 minutes of birth time.

The above, of course, are general guidelines for delineation, although the magic of these progression systems comes to light by way of actual chart illustrations.

Part Two – Chart Illustrations and Examples

The following horoscopes are of individuals taken from the author’s personal client files, and thus only the birth data is given, excluding the names.

Chart #1: Disappearance Case

Data:  May 3, 1981; 1:11 AM PDT (+7); Mount Vernon, WA.  Lagna = 18°29’ Sagittarius; MC = 20°25’ Libra

This is the chart of a 24-year old man who had been missing in the jungles of Laos since March 13, 2006.  He taught English in China, and when on a school break, was trekking in some remote areas of Laos when he disappeared.  All his belongings were still in his hotel room after he disappeared, including his camera, which he would have taken with him had he gone sight-seeing in the jungle.

His parents consulted the author on May 14, 2006 to ascertain from the Jyotish point of view what had happened to their son, whether he was alive or not, and if so where could he be found.  The American Embassy plus the government of Laos were involved in the search.  The man’s family had also contracted with an international team of private investigators who were knowledgeable with the country, its terrain, and its government.  As of this date, there continues to be no sign of the boy anywhere, and local people either do not know of his whereabouts or his disappearance, or they are afraid to say anything.

Astrological Points

• Both the Sun and the Moon in this chart are in Mrityu Bhaga degrees. The Sun’s Vimsottari dasa was operative when he disappeared.
• Longevity is Alpayu (0 to 36 years), with two out of three longevity pairs giving short life. Maraka lord Saturn joins lagna lord in 7th from Arudha lagna, while the Atmakaraka Venus similarly joins maraka lord and Badhakesh Mercury.  Mars in Aries, as 2nd lord from AL is a fierce maraka also, and he is lord of the Shoola dasa sub-period, i.e. Scorpio that was operative at the time.
• Saturn is also Rudra, while Mars is Mahesvara in this chart.

Saturn takes a further sinister role in this chart given its very close proximity to Apamrityu Saham which is at 12°25’ Virgo.  Lagna lord Jupiter is exactly conjoined Mrityu Saham also, which falls at 7°10’ Virgo. These are very dangerous omens not only so far as the native’s longevity is concerned, but also the likelihood of his still being alive at the time the chart was read.

Additional Notes:

• Natal Rahu is in the 22^nd Drekkana, while Sun is in the 64^th Navamsa from the Moon.

• At the time of his disappearance, the Sun as well as the IC had progressed to the exact conjunction of natal Rahu (3˚20’ = 1 year progressions) in the 8^th Similarly, the progressed descendant had moved to within one degree of natal Saturn and Apamrityu Saham.  All of this occurred when the native was in the Vimsottari dasa of Sun, and bhukti period of Rahu. The progressed IC as well as 7^th house cusp have much to do with endings and deaths, especially when in combination with other death-inflicting factors.

• Similarly, the progressed nodes (3˚20’ = 1 year progression) had come to within less than two degrees from natal Moon.

Chart #2: Case of Guru Betrayal

Data: June 25, 1957; 02:14 AM EDT (+4); Manchester, CT.  Lagna = 16°59’ Aries; MC = 29°02’ Sagittarius

The native was betrayed by her guru who left her organization suddenly and without notice thus disappointing and frustrating many students that she had organized to be taught by him.

The chart indicates an intense individual who has encountered many personal conflicts and challenges in life, and these are easily seen by the presence of the strong and unrelieved Sarpa Yoga.[1]  Spiritual life in general, and relationships with any teachers or gurus in particular have likely troubled this person greatly, given the 9^th lord Jupiter in rasi sandhi (0° of its sign), while occupying a debilitated Navamsa as well.  Further, the houses of dharma in the Navamsa (5^th and 9^th) as well as Jupiter are seriously afflicted by the nodes and Saturn.

Additional Notes: 

• In this chart, the Brighu Bindu (Moon/Rahu midpoint) is at 0˚12’ Aquarius, while natal Jupiter is at 0˚33’ of Virgo. Jupiter is thus exactly in the 64^th Navamsa from the Brighu Bindu.  Challenges of a karmic nature with gurus and teachers thus occur in life.

• In the Navamsa chart, 9^th house Rahu is in the 64^th Navamsa from the Moon, while in the Drekkana chart, Saturn is Khara (22^nd Drekkana, or 8^th house of the Drekkana chart), and forms Sarpa yoga with the nodes around Jupiter.

• At the time of the betrayal, transit Rahu moved over the natal Navamsa of Jupiter, while transit Saturn moved over the natal Navamsa 9^th house and Rahu, in the 64^th from the Moon.

Progressions:  By 3˚20’ = 1 year progression, the Moon had moved to within less than a degree of the natal Rahu in the 7^th house.  This brings confusion and bewilderment, as well as emotional suffering to the native.  Similarly, progressed Uranus had moved to the exact degree conjunction of the natal MC which fell at 29° Sagittarius.  Natal 7^th lord Venus was also exactly opposite this, or on the IC cusp at 29° Gemini.  These events would have produced sudden shock and separation from the guru, both attributes being related to Rahu and Uranus astrologically.

The native felt deeply betrayed by the guru, yet all of this can be seen as a karmic process being played out given the exact position of natal 9^th lord Jupiter in the 64^th Navamsa from the Brighu Bindu.

• Finally, since it was an educational institution that the native was running on behalf of the guru, the progressed movement of Mercury to the exact conjunction of natal Rx Saturn in the 8^th house would indicate the termination of the school she had sustained on his behalf. Mercury had progressed to 16˚45’ Scorpio, whereas natal Saturn was at 16˚05’ of that sign. It is significant here also that Saturn is the Bratrikaraka, which is relevant to the guru astrologically.

The event occurred on August 25^th, 2007, when she was running the Vimsottari dasa of Jupiter/Mars/Venus.  Seeing the exact position of natal Venus on the MC/IC axis, and seeing the progressed conjunction of separative Uranus to that axis, one can see the vital connection between events, operative dasas, and progressions.

Chart #3: Car Accident

Data: February 8, 1964; 22:03 PST; Portland, OR. Lagna = 19:04 Virgo; MC = 21°48’ Gemini

The native was in a car accident on Christmas Day (12/25/1989), when the car she was driving over the Oregon Cascade Mountains skidded on ice and went over a cliff.  The native lived, but the three passengers in her car (who were her sisters) all died.

Note the strength of maraka lords Venus and Jupiter in this chart, while the mutual aspect of the Moon + nodes to Venus causes Rudra yoga. Mars is in the 64^th Navamsa from lagna, while Venus/Ketu/Sun are in the 64^th from the Moon, which happens to fall in the 3^rd house of siblings.  Sun is lord of the 22^nd Drekkana also, and also rules mountains, which is where the accident occurred.  By itself, the Moon/Ketu yoga in the 4^th house is sure and certain to bring danger due to vehicular accidents during dasas and progressions which activate these planets.  The accident occurred during the Mars/Venus Yogini dasa.  In the natal Drekkana chart, note that Venus occupies the 3^rd house, and is aspected by Mars and Khara lord Sun.

Note the 1 Navamsa = 1 year progressions:  Progressed MC at 19°20’ comes to the exact degree of the natal ascendant (19°04’ Virgo), while the progressed Ascendant comes to within less than a degree of the natal Ketu in the 4^th house, ruling vehicular accidents.  Also note that progressed Mars at 24˚09’ Aries and in the 8^th house of the rasi chart, comes to an exact opposition to natal Neptune at 24˚27’ of Libra in the Maraka 2^nd house.  The accident occurred as a result of skidding on ice.  In this connection, note the relevance of Neptune as not only bringing death to the native’s sisters, but the manner of death (Neptune being watery) is also indicated by these progressions.

Coincidentally, the transit Saturn and Neptune (representing frozen water, or ice) were respectively located at 21˚ and 18˚ of the sign Sagittarius/4^th house, very close to the natal Ketu which was at 16˚55’ of that sign.

Finally, note that progressed Pluto, representing death, falls in the 3^rd house of siblings, wherein its square angle (aspect) falls almost to the degree to natal Uranus in the 12^th house.  These facts are significant in light of the event being sudden and without warning, while the outcome was the death of the native’s siblings.

 Chart #4: Drowning Accident

Data: July 31, 1952; 21:47 EDT; Rochester, NY.  Lagna = 16°28’ Virgo; MC = 26°27’ Scorpio.

The native was hiking in the jungles of Central America when a flash flood washed her and her companions into a raging river. She was on the verge of drowning, but was rescued at the last minute by her guide.  The incident happened on 8/18/1970.

The chart is very inclined to danger in water or in watery places, as the Rudra yoga forms with Venus and Ketu (accidents) in the 6^th house in the watery sign of Cancer, having mutual rasi aspects with Moon in watery Scorpio.  One would expect such dangers and life-threatening incidents to occur when the native was operating dasa periods of either Venus or the Moon.

On this date, the native was in the Yogini dasa of Venus/Mercury/Saturn.  Note that in the Drekkana chart the Rudra yoga again appears with Venus/Moon/Ketu being in watery Pisces and in the 6^th from the Arudha lagna.  Sub-period lord Mercury is in the 6^th (accidents while traveling) from Venus in the Drekkana chart.  Finally, Saturn is Khara being strong in the Drekkana 8^th house in Capricorn, or in the 22^nd Drekkana, and in the 6^th from Mercury.

A related notation here is that sub-period lord Mercury is also in the 64^th Navamsa from the lagna.

These observations, although compelling, still do not pin the event on the exact date that it occurred.  Progressions will be vital in ascertaining the exact day of the event:

• By 3°20’ = 1 year progression, Neptune (representing the deep waters and currents of the seas and rivers) had moved to the exact degree position of the MC in this chart, i.e. 26°27’ of Scorpio. Neptune’s actual progressed position at the time of the event was 26°07’ of Scorpio, a nearly exact conjunction with the MC.

• Now, the Moon participates in the Rudra yoga in this chart and is conjoined Yogini dasa ruler Venus. Progressing the Moon at a rate of 1° = 1 year, it had reached 27°37’ of Scorpio, which was about a degree beyond the exact conjunction with the MC.  In these exercises, 1° is the widest allowable orb, although in most cases, the event occurs when the progressed planet is almost exactly conjoined a natal factor.  (Generally speaking, the only aspects considered between progressed and natal factors are conjunctions and oppositions, although the squares [90˚ angles] are also sometimes considered).

• Progressed Rahu, however, (at the 1° = 1 year, or Trimsamsa progression) had come to 16°17’ of Aquarius, which is nearly exactly conjoined the ascendant which is at 16°28’ of Aquarius. This shows that a very dangerous encounter, in a foreign country, was sure to occur on or around this date in the native’s life.

One Sign-Per-Year Progression of the Drekkana Chart

As a final interesting observation with progressions, note the position of the Venus/Moon/Ketu Rudra yoga in the Drekkana chart.  The event happened in the native’s 18^th year of life. Now, progressing the signs/houses of the Drekkana at a rate of 1 sign per year from birth, from the sign of the Rudra yoga (Pisces), the corresponding year comes to the 4^th house which falls in the sign of Virgo (a lush, green or earthy place) with Rahu (in a foreign country), while the Rudra yoga (in Pisces/6^th house from AL) itself fully aspects that sign equaling the 18^th year of life.  These facts indicate that some life-threatening event was to happen in a jungle, in a foreign country, within a watery environment!  It was due to the fact that transit Jupiter moved through the sign of Libra/9^th house in her rasi chart, wherefrom his aspect fell onto the ascendant, that the native’s life was spared.  Note too that Jupiter was in the Drekkana of Libra at the time, wherein his aspect fell on the ascendant of the Drekkana chart.

The above illustrations are but a sampling of how progressions of planets and key points in the horoscope can help to time events to the day, even though operative dasas and transits can only indicate a general time period for such events.  Usually, however, the event caused or indicated by a progression is fully supported by dasa periods of the planets involved.  Independent of dasa rulers, the events indicated may not be as dramatic.  The above examples also illustrate only the use of 3°20’ = 1 year of time or 1° = 1 year of time progression sequences.  More research needs to be done on other varga/divisions equaling 1 year of time in a native’s life so as to see the full spectrum and utility of such progressions in timing events with Jyotish.
