This article assumes that the reader is exposed to the principles of Ashtaka Varga system of prediction. Those that are new to this subject are advised to read the books dealing with the basics of Ashtaka varga to get a better understanding of this article.
Kakshya:
The word ‘Kakshya’, in Sanskrit, means a compartment or segment. In Astaka varga system of prediction, each sign is divided into eight compartments of 3 degrees and 45 minutes each as under:.
1st Kakshya —- 0 to 3 deg 45 min
2nd kakshya —- 3 deg 45 min to 7 deg 30min
and so on until,
8th kakshya —- 26 deg 15 min to 30 deg
In this system, the order of the kakshyas is laid down as below:
First Kakshya is that of Saturn, second of Jupiter, third of Mars, fourth of Sun, fifth of Venus, sixth of Mercury, seventh of Moon and eighth Kakshya is that of Lagna (ascendant).
Based on the natal chart, while working out the Prastara Ashtaka varga chart, the donation of bindus is to be placed in the kakshya concerning that planet. Thus, the situation in any Kakshya will be, that kakshya will have either one bindu or zero bindu. Total of bindus of all 8 kakshyas will represent the Bhinnashtaka varga number of that planet in that sign.
How does Kakshya help in evaluation of the natal chart?
Broad evaluation based on Kakshya situation of the 7 planets excluding Rahu & Ketu in any natal chart:-
Note: The following observations are to be taken as broad guidelines and broad indications based on the kakshya situation of the planets concerned. It is advised that no fatalistic view be taken of these conclusions.
1) All the seven planets except Rahu & Ketu are placed in a kakshya with bindu. This is a rare situation generally found in the horoscope of great persons. Such a person is likely to be of good integrity & character & is likely to be born with a mission to be fulfilled in life.
2) 4 planets & above, out of 7 planets except Rahu & Ketu are placed in a kakshya with bindu. Such a person is likely to be above average & is likely to be successful in his/her career & other undertakings but this person may have some shortcomings in his/her personality traits.
3) 3 planets & less, out of 7 planets are placed in a kakshya with a bindu. Such a person is likely to be of average caliber with no spectacular achievements in his/her life. Further, he/she is likely to have too many shortcomings in his/her personality traits.
In addition to above, if lagna also falls in a kakshya with a bindu, it renders the natal horoscope even stronger. Conversely, if the lagna is in a kashya with zero bindu it renders the natal chart a bit weaker.
This will be clear from the horoscope of Shri J.Krishnamurthi a famous spiritual leader that is given below-
DOB May 12 1895 00:30 Madanapalle,Tamil Nadu India
It will be seen from his natal chart that 5 planets namely Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn out of 7 planets excluding Rahu and Ketu are placed in a kakshya with a bindu
In particular, Jupiter is placed in a sign with 6 bindus in its Binnashtakavarga chart. No wonder he was a famous spiritual leader of his time.
How to evaluate a natal chart based in Kakshya situation of each of the 7 planets (excluding Rahu & Ketu)?
It is stated in the classics of astrology that certain results arise according to the situation in one’s natal chart depending on the planet’s placement in kakshya with or without bindu. Each situation will have its own result. The following is a brief explanation such results arising due to placement of a planet in a natal chart in a kakshya with bindu and in a kakshya without bindu.
These results are independent of the placement of these planets with reference to ascendant or the natal Moon sign.
Note: These guidelines may be taken as general indication of trends. It is advised that no fatalistic view be taken of these observations.

Evaluation of natal charts based on bindus in the Bhinnashtaka Varga Charts (we will call it BV chart) and Sarvashtaka varga charts (we will call it SV chart) of various planets:
SV & BV can serve as a good barometer to evaluate results based on the natal position of the planets in the different signs. The general rule is that if a planet in its BV chart is placed in a sign where bindus are more than average, it is to be considered as strongly placed.
Further, if the planet concerned is also placed in a kakshya with bindu in that sign then it is to be considered as doubly strong.
SV charts also serve as good basis for evaluation of strength of planets in a natal horoscope. For example, the best situation for any planet will be to be placed in a sign with more than 28 bindus in the SV chart and concurrently the planet should be placed in a sign in its BV chart having more than 4 bindus. The position will get even better if that planet is also placed in a kakshya with a bindu. This will indicate that the planet is very strongly placed in the natal horoscope. Thus, it will be seen that this evaluation will be totally independent of any similar evaluation based on Shodasa varga charts etc.
Thus, a good evaluation of the strength of planets in a natal chart can be made based on BV & SV charts alone.
It generally seen that if a person has at least 2 planets out of 7 excluding Rahu & Ketu placed in a sign in SV chart having 28 or more bindus and in a sign in BV chart having 4 bindus or more and in a Kakshya having a bindu in his/her natal horoscopes, then that person is likely to make a mark in life in some field or the other.
The above position will become even better if 4 planets are in a sign in SV chart having 28 or more bindus, in a sign in BV chart having 4 or more bindus and in addition these natal planets are placed in a kashya with a bindu. Such person will invariably make s a big mark in life.
The situation becomes even stronger if the ascendant is also placed in a sign in SV chart having 28 or more bindus and in a sign in BV chart having 4 or more bindus and is in addition placed in a kakshya with a bindu.
Conversely, if a person has planets placed in natal charts in signs having less than 28 bindus and in signs having less than 4 bindus in SV charts are likely to be average persons without major achievements in their life.
The above points will be clear from the analysis of some natal horoscopes of famous men & women as given below.
Mr.Bill Clinton former president of USA:
DOB Aug 19, 1946, 8:30 AM Hope ARK 33N40 93W36
In his natal chart, Mars was placed in a sign with 32 bindus in SV chart and in a sign with 5 bindus in BV chart. Mercury was placed in a sign with 34 bindus in SV chart and in a sign with 7 bindus in BV chart. Venus was placed in a sign with 34 bindus in SV chart and in a sign with 4 bindus in BV chart. Saturn was placed in a sign with 34 bindus in SV chart and in a sign with 3 bindus in BV Chart.
In addition, ascendant was placed in a sign with 32 bindus in SV chart and 4 bindus in BV chart.
Mahatma Gandhi
DOB Oct 2 1869 7:33 AM(IST) Porbandar ,India 21N38 69E36
It will be seen from above that in Mahatma Gandhi’s Natal chart Ascendant was in a sign in SV chart having 31 bindus and a BV chart having 3 bindus. Sun was in a sign in SV chart having 31 bindus and in BV chart having 6 bindus and Moon was in a sign in SV chart having 36 bindus and in a sign in BV chart having 7 bindus.
Evaluation based on Transit position of planets in reference to Sarvashtaka Varga Chart:
The general rule is that when a planet, benefic or malefic, transits over a sign with 28 bindus or more in the SV chart some benefits accrue to the native enabling the native to make good progress in his career & other undertakings.
Conversely, when any planet, benefic or malefic, transits the sign with 27 or less number of bindus, native will be prone to problems in his undertakings and his progress in his career and other undertakings are likely to get affected.
This will be very apparent when a planet posited in a sign with 28 and more bindus moves over to a sign with 27 or less number of bindus.
For example, if a benefic or a malefic planet after transiting a sign with 40 bindus moves over to a sign with 24 bindus only, the native will be prone to several problems soon after the transit in his career and other undertakings.
How does this information help?
We can succeed in a big way if we time our activities to coincide with the transit of slow moving planet like Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
For example in the natal Chart of Former first lady and Senator Hillary Clinton given below, she has 41 bindus in Leo in her SV chart. Currently both Saturn & Ketu are transiting Leo having 41 bindus the highest number of bindus and Saturn’s transit will last until Sep 2009 & Ketu’s transit will last until May 6, 2008. These two transits have good potential to increase the success rate in all her current undertakings.
Evaluation based on transit position of planets in reference to the BV Charts of the planets concerned:
The general rule is that: when a planet, benefic or malefic transits over a sign with more than 4 bindus in its BV chart, the success rate is likely to go up in all undertakings.
Conversely, when any planet, benefic or malefic, transits a sign with 2 or low bindus, in its BV chart the native will be prone to problems in his undertakings.
It has been observed in the charts of many persons that whenever the planet Saturn (karaka for health & longevity), transits low bindus (2 or below), the person’s health becomes a problem and when Saturn transits zero bindu the native becomes prone to life threatening situations.
Evaluation based on transits of planets through the Kakshyas in each sign:
Now days it is easy to make out a daily Kakshya count report of all the 7 planets excluding Rahu & Ketu. Some Computer software’s have this feature. Such daily Kakshya count report will help to evaluate the good and bad days on daily basis. This is irrespective of the evaluation based on the Nakshatra ruling on a particular day and other factors like ‘Gochara’ etc.
For example, on days when at least 5 out of 7 planets (excluding Rahu & Ketu) transit a kakshya with bindu, then that day is likely to be a very good day conducive to very good success in all undertakings.
If 4 planets on a particular day transit kakshyas with a bindu then that day is likely to be a good day &the success rate on such days is likely to be above average.
If 3 planets only transit kakshyas with a bindu on any particular day then that day is likely to be a problematic day during which the native will be prone to problems in his career & other undertakings
If 2 planets or one planet only transit kakshyas with a bindu on any particular day then that day is likely to be a highly problematic day during which the native will be prone to some major setbacks in his /her undertakings & may even be prone to life threatening situations.
In no planet out of seven planets excluding Rahu & Ketu, transit kakshya with a bindu, then that day is likely to be a very bad day during which the native be prone to major setbacks and life threatening situations.
This will be clear from the horoscopes of some famous persons as given below
Late Indira Gandhi former Prime minister of India
DOB Nov 19 1917 23:11, Allahabad ,India 25N27 81E51
Late Indira Gandhi was assassinated on Oct 31, 1984. On that day, Sun, Mars, Jupiter & Saturn transited kakshya with 0 bindu and only Mercury/Moon transited a kakshya with a bindu and it is likely that Moon also transited a kakshya with zero bindu at the time of assassination.
Late Princess Diana (DOB Jul 6 1961, 19:45 hrs Sandringham, England. Lat 52N50 Long 00E30
Publisher: For those interested to dig deeper Gandhi was assassinated in Delhi on 10/31/1984, 2:00 PM. Delhi.
Late princess Diana died in an auto accident on Aug 31, 1997, at Paris. It is seen that on the day of the accident Sun, Mercury, Jupiter & Saturn all transited kakshyas with zero bindu and only Moon & Mars transited a kakshya with bindu (It is also likely that at the time of accident Moon was also transiting a kakshya with zero bindus as Moon’s transit over a kakshya is just 6 hrs 45 min only).
Conversely, when kakshya count is high namely 5 and above some major positive developments are indicated on that day.
