Article by Jagdish Raj Ratra
Maharishi Jaimini selects, as per rules, one of the Rashi from Janam Lagna Chart(the mother chart) as UPAPADA LAGNA and make predictions about the spouse of the native. He has dedicated full chapter to Upapada. Predictions especially relates to conjugal harmony or distractions or rejection of spouse due to diseases or deformities (Sutra no. 2 to 23). We have written detailed articles on ‘Upapada” –the ultimate determinant of family and married life and horoscope matching under upapada., (2) profile of progeny through spouse (Sutra No. 24 to 31), (3) co-borns of spouse, their longevity, number, physical formities(Sutra no. 43), (5)whether the spouse is born legitimately or out of adultery (Sutra No. 44to 48); whether this information is in public domain or a secret.
Coming back to our topic we give hereinafter the relevant sutras.

चन्द्रेण एक पुत्र : (26)
मिश्रे विलम्वात पुत्र : (27)

ग्रहक्रमात् कक्षी तदीश पंचांश ग्रहेभ्यश्चैवम् (31)
The first sutra deals with spouses who are destined not to have children. In this sutra a strange word अनपत्य: has been used. It refers to physical spouse but without productive functions of a spouse i.e. sexually unfunctional or barren spouse. Mercury, Saturn and venus are important in decreasing order. A notable point about 3 planets is that their rashi are triangular to each other.
Sutra No. 26 to 30 need no explanation. The basic question is when Mercury, Saturn and Venus become child negative? The answer is provided in Sutra no. 31. The key word is Kukshi Which has been interpreted by some scholars as Lagan and others as VII Bhava. We humbly differ from them. Kukshi is ovary (Ordinarily called ‘कोख’ in Hindi speaking regions) the nursery of sperms and is represented by VI Bhava (see note at the end).
Kukshi lords have to be derived
- From Upapada Lagna as lord of 6th Bhava counted in forward way (1,2,3….,12). If Upapada Lagna falls in odd Rashi and by reverse count if upapada lagna falls in even rashi.
- From Navamsha tulya rashi obtained by Putrakarak planets (planet ranking 5th in degree scale in any house) lord of 6th Bhava. Here the count is direct only.
These two 6th lords decide the fertility or barrenness of the couple. - If both 6th lords are mercury/ Saturn/ Venus, there will be no children
- If 6th Lords are other than Mercury, Saturn or Venus there are bright chances of getting children by the couple.
- The rule No.2 gets cancelled if Mars becomes the Putrakaraka and aspects the Putra Sthans. There will be no children as it will cause abortions or will give still borns.
Now we test these assertions made by us on authentic charts. In his book Jaimini Sutram, Dr. P.S. Shastri has given 24 charts No. 147 to 170 of childless natives. We have selected 9 charts ignoring other 15 where degrees of Lagna are not given. The reason being we calculate Aroodhas on degree basis and not sign basis.
Some technical terms used in this write up are explained:
• Lagna Pitree is the rashi obtained by lagna lord in the native’s chart.
• Aru Bhava is the successor Bhava (II Bhava) from Pitree sign under Male horoscope.
• Agar Bhava is predecessor bhava (XII bhava) from Pitee sign under female horoscope.
• Bhava counting system under upapada lagna and Pitree Lagna is both forward and backward depending upon whether they are odd or even. 1,3,5,7,9,11 are odd and 2,4,6,8,10,12 are even.
- Aroodha Lagna calculation is of two types:
• General rule : double the longitudes of Rashi Lord reduced by (mins) longitudes of Rashi for which Aroodha is required. Longitude of Rashi=Longitude of Lagna +30°. Per sign till the target Rashi for Aroodha.
• Special rules where Rashi lord is placed in 1st, 4th, 7th & 10th sign from its own Rashi call them ist Kendra, 2nd Kendra & 4th Kendra add 90° to Rashi Lord to get Upapada Lagna. When Rashi lord is in 3rd or 4th Kendra add 270° to Rashi Lord to get Upapada Lagna. - Putra Karak is that planet which is 5th in degree rank amongst longitudes of planets in sign occupied by them in a native’s chart.

Note :
Break up of Sutra No. 31 into two parts reveal the utility of this Sutra. The first part ग्रहक्रमात् कुक्षि तदीश is quite simple to understand . it means from upapada lagan asper direct or reverse counting applicable in each case find VI Rashi (Kukshi) and its Lord.
The second part is bit tricky it reads पंचमांश ग्रहभय: च एवं . It means Navamsha of fifth rank planets on degree scale per sign i.e. Navamsha Lagan of Putrakarak. Then comes एवं it is the best guide to save what has been said in part one of the sutra otherwise the Rashi would have said पुत्रकारकांशात ग्रह क्रमात कुक्षि तदीश . He has saved this repetition by use of word एवं. This has prints two planets lording VI Rashi from Upapada and Navamsha of Putrakara.
He has dome this at many places in the text. We give one example to convince the readers. It is आयु: पितृ दिनेशमयाम (Sutra No.1 of ayn section of chapter 2) एवं मंद चन्द्रामयाम (Sutra No.5) Sutra No. 1 says Ayu is controlled by the lord of the sign in which the lagna lord is placed and 8th lord from such sign. Rishi then propounds Sutrs No. 2,3 and 4 for long, medium and short life respectively. Under sutra No. 5 he introduces Saturn Pitree & VIII lord there from and Moon Pitree & VIII Lord from therefrom Bhava count both direct and reverse depending upon Pitree sign is odd or even. Thus 2 parts are constituted by using एवं which also covers sutra No. 2.3.4. avoiding their repetition for Saturn Pitree & Moon Pitree Panels. It is wonderful use of एवं.
