हमारे शास्त्रों के अनुसार दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा दान अगर कुछ है तो वह है अन्नदान। यह संसार अन्न से ही बना है और अन्न की सहायता से ही इसकी रचनाओं का पालन हो रहा है। अन्न एकमात्र ऐसी वस्तु है जिससे शरीर के साथ-साथ आत्मा भी तृप्त होती है। पद्मपुराण में इससे संबंधित एक कथा भी मिलती है।
