Article by Iranganti Rangacharya
In the galaxy of our past profound research scholars of Parasiri system of Astrology, Mantreswara was the last learned researcher whose one and only one innovation on progeny, impregnated in just two Sanskrit stanzas, is the cynosure of his reputed work, Phala Deepika. His research constitutes a method of examining virility in the male horoscopic chart and fertility in the female horoscopic chart. The method exposed in the two verses is complete with the three applications viz., Beeja Sphuta, Kshetra Sphuta and Progeny Tithi Sphuta, Beeja Sphuta and Kshetra Sphuta are made use of commonly by astrologers but Progeny Tithi Sphuta has been ignored. But such partial application of the method disproves the merit of Mantreswara’s research.
In this article, my attempt is to expose the three Sphutas and verify the veracity of Mantreswara’s research concerning progeny with a few illustrations. I hope the esteemed readers will be amply convinced of it and can verify the principles in their choice charts too.
The three Sphutas are (1) Beeja Sphuta (2) Kshetra Sphuta (3) Progeny Tithi Sphuta. The Beeja Sphuta should be applied in the husband’s chart and the Kshetra Sphuta should be applied in the wife’s chart. Progeny Tithi Sphuta should be applied in both the charts.
- Beeja Sphuta
Add the longitudes of the Sun, Venus and Jupiter in the husband’s chart. The sum of these three gives a sign and its Navamsa. For example the longitude of the Sun is 1s.6°.39’; the longitude of Venus is 2s.17°.40’, and the longitude of Jupiter is 11s.3°.51’. On adding we get 2s.28°.10’. Now remove the 12 signs. We get 2s.28° 10’. It means that the sign is Gemini and its Navamsa also in Gemini. Both are odd signs.
Use of Beeja Sphuta
If the sign and its Navamsa, obtained from the Beeja Sphuta, are odd, virility is present for and chances of progeny are good. If the sign and its Navamsa are even, the virility is nil and hence the chances of progeny are nil. If one is odd while the other is even, the chances of delay for progeny are indicated.
- Kshetra Sphuta
Add the longitudes of Jupiter, Moon and Mars in the wife’s chart. Find the sign and its Navamsa as shown above.
Use of Kshetra Sphuta
If the sign and its Navamsa are even, fertility is present and hence the chances of progeny are assured. If the sign and its Navamsa are odd, fertility is absent and hence the chances of progeny are nil. If one is odd and the other is even, the chances of delay for progeny are indicated.
- Progeny Tithi Sphuta
Progeny Tithi Sphuta is essential since the method will be complete by the final judgment of the Tithi and Karana got by Progeny Tithi Sphuta. Multiply the longitude of the Moon by 5. Multiply the longitude of the Sun by 5. Now subtract the longitude of the Sun from the longitude of the Moon. Convert the figure into degrees etc. and divide this by 12. The quotient gives the number of tithis elapsed. So the quotient+1 give the tithi required. If this is less than 15, it is deemed to be in the dark half. If the remainder is less than 6, the tithi is said to be in the 1st half, and if it exceeds 6, it would be the 2nd half. Now find out the corresponding karana. To know at a glance, which tithi corresponds to which karana, the following table can be used.
TITHI – KARANA TABLE |
Bright half Dark half
Tithi 1st half 2nd half Tithi 1st half 2nd half |
1 Kristuguna bava 1 balava kaulava 2 balava kaulava 2 taitula garaja 3 taitula garaja 3 vanija vishti 4 vanija vishti 4 bava balava 5 bava balava 5 kaulava taitula 6 kaulava taitula 6 garaja vanija 7 garaja vanija 7 vishti bava 8 vishti bava 8 balava kaulava 9 balava kaulava 9 taitula garaja 10 taitula garaja 10 vanija vishti 11 vanija vishti 11 bava balava 12 bava balava 12 kaulava taitula 13 kaulava titular 13 garaja vanija 14 garaja vanija 14 vishti sakuni 15 vishti bava 15 chatushpada naga Poornima Amavasya |
Example for the Progeny Tithi Sphuta:
The longitude of the Moon is 9s.2°.35’ and the longitude of the Sun is 1s.6°.9’.
Moon = 9s.2°.35’ X 5 = 45s12°.55’
Sun = 1s.6°.9’ X 5 = 6s.3°.15’
Subtracting = 39s9°.40’
Remove the 3 multiples of 12 signs. We get 3s9°.40’. This means 99°.40’. Divide this by 12. The quotient will be 8 and the remainder will be 3°.40’. Hence the quotient 8+1=9. Since 9 is less than 15, the tithi is the 9th lunar day of the bright half (Sukla Navami). The remainder 3°.40’ is less than 6. So the tithi required is the 1st half of the 9th lunar day of the bright half. The corresponding Karana is balava (see the tithi-karana table on the previous page).
Use Of Progeny Tithi Sphuta
Judge the tithi-karana obtained by the Progeny Tithi Sphuta. 1.Tithis in the bright half are benefic and promote the chances of progeny.2.Tithis in the dark half are malefic and reduce the chances of progeny. 3.Randhratithis viz, 4th,6th,8th,9th,12th and 14th lunar days in either half are malefic and reduce the chances of progeny.4.The 1st lunar day of the dark half(which is equal to the Full Moon) is benefic and promote the chances of progeny. 5. The 14th lunar day of the bright half (equal to the Full Moon) through a randhra tithi, is benefic and promotes the chances of progeny. The fixed karanas viz., chatushpada, nagava, kimstugna and sakuni, and the chara karanas, viz., vishti (bhadra) are malefic, while the remaining six chara karanas are benefic.
N.B: Chances of progeny will be promoted if both the tithi and karana are benefic. If any one between the tithi and karana is malefic, chances of progeny will be reduced. If the Beeja Sphuta (odd sign and odd Navamsa) is strong, the malefic tithi alone cannot reduce the chances of progeny. But the malefic karana particularly vishti destroys the chances of progeny, through the tithi is benefic. The same may be considered in the case of the strong Kshetra Sphuta (even sign, even Navamsa).
CASE – I:-
Husband 3-6-1962 at 5.55 p.m.
Sun = 1s.18°.50’ Venus 2s.20°.26’, Jupiter10s.17°..50’
Adding we get 14s.27°.2’. Remove multiples of 12 signs. We get 2s.27°.2’.
Hence the sign is Gemini and the Navamsa also is Gemini. Both are odd signs. Hence there are sure chances of progeny by Beeja Sphuta.
Moon = 1s.28°.47’ X 5 = 9s.23°.55’
Sun = 1s.18°.58’ X 5 = 8s.4°.10’
Subtracting 1s.19°.45’
Converting this into degrees we get 40°.45’. This when divided by 12; gives quotient 4 and the remainder 1°.45’. Hence the tithi is the 1st half of sukla panchami and the karana is bava. Since both karana and tithi are benefic, the chances of progeny are assured.
Wife : 23.9.1962 at 12.30 p.m.
Jupiter = 10s.13°.2’, Moon 3s.6°.51’, Mars = 2s.27°.35’
Adding we get 16s.17°.28’. Remove multiples of 12 signs, we get 4s.17°.28’. Hence the sign is Leo and the Navamsa is Virgo. One is odd while the other is even. So delayed chances of progeny are indicated by Kshetra Sphuta.
Moon = 3s.6°.51’ X 5 = 16s.4°.15’
Sun = 5s.7°.27’ X 5 = 26.7°.15’
Subtracting 1s.27°0’
Converting this into degrees, we get 57°. This when divided by 12, gives 4 as quotient and 9 as remainder. So the tithi is the 2nd half of sukla panchami. The karana is balava. Since both the tithi and karana are benefic, the delay in progeny is removed. The couples are blessed with two sons.
Case 2:-
Husband 17.10.1918 at 4.09 a.m.
Sun = 4s.29°.15’ , Venus 5s.23°.43’, Jupiter2s.22°..32’
Adding we get 13s.15°.30’. Removing multiples of 12 signs we get 1s.15°.30’. So the sign is Taurus and the Navamsa also is Taurus. Since both are even signs, chances of progeny are nil.
Moon = 10s.18°.16’ X 5 = 53s.1°.20’
Sun = 5s.29°.15’ X 5 = 29s.26°.15’
Subtracting 23s.5°.5’
11s.5°.5’ = 335°.5’
This when divided by 12, gives 27 as quotient and 11 as the remainder. Hence the tithi is the 2nd half of the 13th lunar day of the dark half which is malefic and the karana is vanija. Since karana alone is benefic, chances of progeny are not improved.
Wife = 17th July 1925 at 3.55 p.m.
Jupiter = 8s.23°.52’, Moon 1s.23°.33’, Mars 3s.20°.28’.
Adding we get 14s.7°.53’. Removing multiples of 12 signs, we get 2s.7°.53’. So the sign is Gemini and its Navamsa is Sagittarius. Since both are odd signs, chances of progeny are nil.
Moon = 1s.23°.33’ Sun = 3s.1°.15’
Moon = 1s.23°.33’ X 5 = 8s.27°.45’
Sun = 3s.1°.15’ X 5 = 15s.6°.15’
Subtracting 5s.21°.30’ = 17°.30’
Divide 171°.30’ by 12, we get 14 as quotient and 3 as the remainder. Hence the tithi is the 1st half of Poornima and karana is vishti. Hence the chances of progeny remain nil. The couples are not blessed with children, but have adopted one son and a daughter.
Case 3:-
Husband 15.2.1953 at 10.30 a.m.
Sun = 7s.29°.43’, Venus 7s.18°.46’, Jupiter = 1s.28°.02’.
Adding, we get 17s.16°.31. Removing one multiple of 12, we get 5s.16°.31’. Hence the sign is Virgo and its Navamsa is Taurus. Since both are even, chances of progeny are nil.
Moon = 11s.19°.48’ Sun = 7s.29°.43’
Moon = 11s.19°.48’ X 5 = 58s.9°.0’
Sun = 7s.29°.43’ X 5 = 39s.28°.35’
Subtracting 18s.10°.25’
12s
6s.10°.25’
Hence the degrees etc., are 190°.25’. This when divided by 12, gives 15 as quotient and 10°.25’ as the remainder. So the tithi is the 2nd half of the 1st lunar day of the dark half which is benefic. The karana is kaulava which is benefic. Since both the tithi and karana are benefic, the chances for progeny are assured.
Wife 4-11-1957 at 7.17 p.m.
Jupiter = 5s.25°.21’, Moon = 11s.14°.36’, Mars 6s.4°.01’.
Adding we get 23s.13°.58’, removing the multiple of 12, 11s.13°.58’. Hence the sign is Pisces and its Navamsa is Scorpio. Since both are even signs, chances of progeny are assured.
Moon = 11s.14°.36’ Sun = 6s.18°.36’
Moon = 11s.14°.36’ X 5 = 57s.13°.0’
Sun = 6s.18°.36’ X 5 = 33s.3°.0’
Subtracting 24s.10°.0’
24s.0
0s.10°.0’
Hence the tithi is the 2nd half of the 1st lunar day of the bright half which is benefic. The karana is bava which is benefic. Hence the chances of progeny are good. The couple is blessed with two sons.
Case4:-
Husband 10.11.1952 at 11.50 a.m.
Sun = 6s.24°.16’, Venus 8s.0°.18’, Jupiter 0s.22°.28’
Adding, we get 15s.17°.02’. Removing 12 signs, we get 3s.17°.02’. Hence the sign is Cancer and its Navamsa sign is Sagittarius, indicating the chances of delay for progeny.
Moon = 4s.1°.36’ Sun = 6s.24°.16’
Moon = 4s.1°.36’ X 5 = 20s.8°.0’
Sun = 6s.24°.16’ X 5 = 34s.1°.20’
Subtracting 10s.6°.40’
This means 306°.40’ which when divided by 12, gives 25 as quotient and 6°.20’ as the remainder. Hence the tithi is the 2nd half of the 11th lunar day of the dark half which is malefic. The karana is balava which is benefic. Since the tithi is malefic, the chances of delay are spoiled and thus chances of progeny are nil.
Wife 7-7-1958 at 12.02 a.m.
Jupiter = 5s.28°.26’, Moon 10s.26°.12’, Mars = 11s.24°.39’.
Adding, we get 28s.19°.17’, removing the multiples of 12, we get 4s.19°.17’. Hence the sign is Leo and its Navamsa sign is Virgo. So the chances of delay for progeny are indicated.
Moon = 10s.26°.12’ Sun = 2s.20°.38’
Moon = 10s.26°.12’ X 5 = 54s.11°.0’
Sun = 2s.20°.38’ X 5 = 13s.13°.10’
Subtracting 4s.27°.50’
This means 147°.50’ which when divided by 12, gives 12 as quotient and 3°.50’ as the remainder. Hence the tithi is the 1st half of the 12th lunar day of the bright half. The karana is kaulava. Since both the tithi and karana are benefic, chances are improved for progeny. But in the case of husband the chances for progeny are nil. Hence the couple are not blessed with children even after ten years of marriage.
Case 5:-
Husband 13-10-1952 at 6.52 a.m.
Sun = 5s.26°.25’, Venus = 6s.25°.35’, Jupiter 0s.26°.12;.
Adding, we get 13s.18°.12’, removing a multiple of 12, we get 1s.18°.12’. Hence the sign is Taurus and its Navamsa is Gemini. So delay for progeny is indicated.
Moon = 3s.20°.52’ Sun = 5s.26°.25’
Moon = 3s.20°.52’ X 5 = 18s.14°.20’
Sun = 5s.26°.25’ X 5 = 29s.12°.5’
Subtracting 1s.2°.15’
Which means 32°.15’. This when divided by 12, gives the quotient 2 and the remainder 8°.15’. So the tithi is the 2nd half of the 3rd lunar day of the bright half and the karana is garaja. Since both the tithi and karana are benefic, chances of progeny are promoted.
Wife 13-10-1955 at 12.50 a.m.
Jupiter = 4s.2°.12’, Moon = 5s.1°.2’, Mars = 5s.6°.57’.
Adding, we get 14s.10°.11’. Removing 12 signs we get 2s.10°.11’. Hence the sign is Gemini and its Navamsa is Capricorn. So the chance of delay for progeny are indicated.
Moon = 5s.1°.2’ Sun = 5s.26°.25’
Moon = 5s.1°.2’ X 5 = 25s.5°.10’
Sun = 5s.26°.25’ X 5 = 29s.12°.5’.
Subtracting 7s.23°.5’ which means 233°.5’ which when divided by 12, gives 19 as quotient and 5°.5’ as the remainder. Hence the tithi is the 1st half of the 5th lunar day of the dark half and the karana is kalava. Thus the chance of progeny are made nil by the malefic tithi. The couple is childless.
