Referring to our article in the previous issue of Saptarishis Astrology Vol 3 Aug 2008 release we recall some of the rules for Gripping of Planets by the Nodes, it is reproduced is reproduced here as under :-

1. A planet in conjunction, opposition or square to Node, will be gripped. The closest grip will be within five degree deference between a planet and Node and only when the degree of Node is more than the degree of the planets.
2. A planet when gripped by the Node, will give adverse result for the matter of the houses owned by the gripped planet and also house occupied by the gripped planet.
Node completes the cycle of twelve signs in about 18 years and during the period of this transit, a native experiences adverse result whenever transiting Node makes an aspect of conjunction, opposition or square with the gripped planet.
This is an abstract of earlier article and shows the general effects of Node on the gripped planet during transit. But in this article, the theory of gripped planets is explained with reference to Progress Theory of western astrology. There is an importance of progress theory of planets in western astrology and this article is more or less closely connected with progress theory. Therefore it is very essential to know the main principle of theory of progression of planets.
First of all, in progress theory, the birth chart of a native is the base of this theory.

There will be fix degrees and minutes of planets occupied in the birth chart according to birth time and birth place. After the birth of a native, the planet will move day after day. In this theory, the movement of a planet of one day is considered equal to one year in life of native. For instance, the birth date of a native is 11th June 1922. Now after seven days that is on date 18-06-1922, the position of planets on this date will be applied in eighth year in the life of a native that is in the year 1929 of a native. This progressed horoscope of 18th June, 1922 is calculated on the same time and place of birth chart. Simply, the date will defer, but time and place will be same as birth chart. Above theory is clarified by an instance given below: –

Place of Birth: Ahmadabad (Gujarat)

(1) Progressed chart and Planets (18th June-1922)

It is observed from the progressed horoscope that planets like Sun, Moon and Venus have progressed and changed their signs also. Other planets are in the same signs at birth but their degrees have changed. Progressed planets are compared with the planets at birth and all the aspects formed by progressed planets to the planets at birth are noted. If the progressed planets are in good aspects with the planets at birth, it gives good result and in case of bad aspects, adverse results are experienced. While comparing aspects between progressed planets and planets at birth, the possibilities indicated in the birth horoscope must be borne in the mind for interpretation.

‘The adverse effect of the gripped planet by Node will be over after the Progressed Node crosses the degree of a gripped planet at birth, please note here the progression of Node only is taken into consideration, keeping the degree of a planet fix at birth.’

The gripped planets gives adverse effect but when will this adverse effect of gripped planet be over and good result will be experienced is an important factor. For knowing this, effect of a gripped planet will be explained by applying Progressed Theory.

The difference in degree between a planet and Node is an important factor. A planet is gripped when degree of Node is more than the degree of the planet. In this situation, Node is always retrograde in movement and during progressions; it comes closer to the gripped planet. It is an applying aspect of Node to the planet and therefore a planet is considered gripped by Node, in this position. Now during Progression of Node, it will make conjunction with a gripped planet and after that it crosses the degree of a planet at birth.

The time required to cross the degree of a planet at birth by the Progressed Node depends upon the differences between them at birth.

a) The adverse effect of the gripped planet by Node will be over after the Progressed Node crosses the degree of a gripped planet at birth, please note here the progression of Node only is taken into consideration, keeping the degree of a planet fixed at birth.
b) As per progressed theory mentioned above the movement of planets for one day measures one year in life of a native. The average daily motion of a Node is three minutes. Therefore a Node takes about twenty days for movement of one degree. Therefore considering one day equal to one year, a Node makes movement of 3 minutes in a year during progression and it takes 20 years approximately for a node to move one degree during progression.
c) Therefore it is very important to know the time taken by Nodes during progression to cross the degree of a gripped planet. As per progress theory, a Node takes about twenty years to move one degree during progression therefore, if any planet is at distance two to three degrees from Node in birth chart, then there is a chance for Node during progression to cross the degree of a gripped planet birth during the life period of a native.
d) If difference in degrees is more than five degrees between Node and a gripped planet in birth chart, then there is no chance for the Node during progression to cross the degree of a gripped planet during the lifetime of a native and adverse effect of a gripped planet will be experienced by a native during whole life. For instance, if Jupiter is two degree in distance from Node, then Jupiter will give very good results after forty years.

Just as in the sky, the cloud hides the sun and therefore, there is no sunshine. Bus as soon as the cloud passes away from the sun, then one experiences sun shine. In the same way when Nodes grip a planet, the positive effect of a planet is suppressed and it will not give favorable results. Then as soon as Node crosses over the planet during progression then the planet gives the most beneficial results.

For clarification of the above principle the following birth charts are given.

Chart-1: Male
Date of Birth: 11th June 1922
Time of Birth: 1h-45m Am
Place of Birth: Ahmadabad (Gujarat)
Latitude: 23° N 02
Longitude: 72°E37

In the above chart, ascendant is in Pisces and South Node (Ketu) is also in Pisces. Moon is in Sagittarius and placed in tenth house. Therefore South Node (Ketu) is in square aspect to Moon. The degree of South Node is 12°23, and degree of Moon is 10°56. The degree of Moon is less then degree of South Node. Therefore Moon is gripped by South Node. Moon is the owner of fifth house and placed in tenth house and also karaka of fourth the matter of home & comfort (Regarding fourth house); Love affair speculation & education (Regarding fifth house). And unsteady career (Regarding tenth house). After the progressed South Node crosses the degree of moon at birth i.e. 10°56 native gets free from advance effect of Node as mentioned above.

‘If difference in degrees is more than five degrees between Node and a gripped planet in birth chart, then there is no chance for the Node during progression to cross the degree of a gripped planet during the lifetime of a native and adverse effect of a gripped planet will be experienced by a native during whole life.’

In this case, moon is 1°27 less than the degree of South Node. Now according to progress theory, the South Node during progression comes on 10°-56 in Pisces on date 8-July-1922. Therefore on 8th July, 1922 South Node crosses the degree of Moon at birth and then Moon will be free from adverse effects of South Node. Now, rule for progressed theory says that one day is equal to one year. According to this rule, there will be 27 days up to 8th July 1922 counting from the birth date 11th June 1922. And 27 days will be equal to 27 years in the life of a native. Considering 27 years for 27 days, the year will be 1949 in the life of the native; hence, native got big house & comfort, success in love affair & speculation, and completed his post graduation study after the years 1949.

Similarly in the above chart, Saturn is in conjunction with North Node (Rahu) in Virgo and placed in seventh house. The degree of North Node (Rahu) is 12°23 and degree of Saturn is 8°05. The degree of Saturn is 4°18 less than the degree of North Node. Therefore, Saturn is gripped by North Node. Saturn is owner of 11th and 12th house and placed in seventh house and also karaka for longevity. Therefore Saturn gives adverse results for matter of success in life (Regarding 11th house), expenses (Regarding 12th house), and Public life (Regarding 7th house). After the progressed North Node crossed the degree of Saturn at birth i.e. 8°05, the native got free from adverse effects of North Node.

The degree of Saturn in birth chart is 8°05. The degree of North Node during progression is 8°05 on date 30-08-1922, North Node crosses the degree of Saturn at birth and Saturn will get free from its adverse effect. It will be 80 days up to 30th august 1922, counting from the birth date 11th June, 1922; the rule for the progress theory says that one day is equal to one year. Therefore, 80 days will be equal to 80 years in the life of a native. Considering 80 years for 80 days, the year will be 2002 in the life of a native. Therefore, native experiences good results; gets success in life enjoys reputed public life after the year 2002. Saturn is karaka for longevity, therefore native enjoys good health after year 2002. This has been true in the above natives life.

Native: Male
Date of birth: 10th Feb 1932
Time of birth: 00h-39m a.m
Place of birth: Ahmadabad (Gujarat)
Latitude: 23°N 02
Longitude: 72° E 37

In the above chart, ascendant is in Libra, Moon and Venus are placed in sixth house in conjunction with North Node (Rahu) in Pisces. The degree of North Node is 05°16 and degrees of Moon and Venus are 03°01 and 03°34 respectively therefore, Moon and Venus, both the planets are gripped by North Node.

Therefore at first we understand the effect of the gripped planet Venus in above chart Venus is the owner of first and eighth house and placed in sixth house. Venus is also karaka planet of comfort. Therefore, Venus gives adverse results of above houses. Native has studied in medical field and completed his education with MBBS degree. But during the study he had to face all sorts of difficulties in life because he was born in a large family having more than seven members. Therefore there was shortage of finance for the progress of the native. Native has completed his education with self effort and hardship. (Adverse result of first house self effort & hardship). There was a shortage of money for education but he could not get money from his father (No legacy –adverse results of eighth house) he had to take loan and scholarship for completing his education (adverse result of sixth house- need of loan) Venus is also karaka of comfort but native had to study in hardship without any comfort. After progress North Node crossed the degree of Venus at birth i.e. 03°34, native got free from the adverse effect of North Node as mentioned above.

In this case, Venus is on 03°34 in Pisces at birth. According to progress theory, the North Node moves to 03°34 on date 13th March 1932 in Pisces. Therefore, on 13th march, 1932, North Node crosses the degree of Venue of birth and Venus will be free from adverse effects. Now counting from the birth date of a native I.e. 10th February, 1932, the count comes to 31 days. As per the rule of progress theory one day equal to one year, the native gets the beneficial results of Venus from his 31st year onwards and that will be the year 1963 of his life. Therefore native completes his education with MBBS degree gets services in hospital and began his earning after the year 1963.

Now we will understand the effect of a gripped moon in the above chart. Moon is the owner of tenth house and placed in the sixth house in Pisces. Moon is also Karaka planet of fourth house and family. Therefore, moon gives adverse results of above houses-Moon also shows circumstances as mentioned above. After completing his study of MBBS, Native wanted to start his independent professional career with his own clinic, but due to shortage of funds he could not do as desired. (Adverse results of 10th house of career) and he had to join a job in a hospital. During the service also there was lot of hardship. He had to work extremely hard and life was very irregular (sixth house-advance in service)

After service of two to three years, he could start his own clinic. For establishing his professional career as a doctor, he had to take Loan (sixth house –Loan). In his own clinic, he had to work day and night for clearing his debt. (Tenth house-hard ship in career) Moon is also karaka of family; therefore he had to take responsibility for his brothers and sisters also.

In this case, natal moon is on 03°01 in Pisces. As per Progress Theory on 23rd March, 1932, North Node will cross the degree of moon at birth and Moon will be free from adverse effects of North Node. Now counting from the birth date of the native I. e 10th February 1932 to 23rd march, 1932 it will be 41 days which means 41st year. This is as per the rule of progress theory, one day equal to one year, the native gets the beneficial result of Moon from his 41st year onwards and that will be the year 1974 in the life of the native. Therefore native earns large amount of money, clears all his debt, purchases big house and vehicle & completes the responsibility of marriage of his sister after the year 1974. Now at the present state of his life, the native lives a very prosperous life with all sorts of luxury and comfort.

We have used this technique for more than 15 years over 5000 charts and found it working phenomenally well, it explains the reason why a persons bhagya (prosperity/fortune) has been locked for X number of years without using yogas… It is our sincere request to the younger generation to test this method further and develop it further by continuously using it.

Note:-
In the above article, we have observed that a planet is gripped by the Node if the degree of a planet is less than the degree of a Node. But a planet may be gripped by a Node even though the degree of a planet is more than the degree of a Node. If the readers are interested in theory of such type of gripped planet we may write in future.
