Who ignited in me the light of Jyotiṣa
“Jyotiṣa is the art of seeing light, of guiding, of counseling based on the truth
called the horoscope. Jyotiṣa is the pathway to God through the mazes of intuitions and the brilliance of an organized science, like any other science. Jyoti ṣa is the
fusion of the divine with the mundane, the metaphysical with the scientific
methodology, a divine chorus of the music of the heavens and the dance of the stars. It is that divine ballet, Jyotiṣa, which is at once both a divinity and science that we are presenting.”
Introduction
Since the year 2000, I have been predicting the outcome of the U.S. presidential elections. Each election year after the two political parties have had their conventions and the nominees are finalized, I have written an article predicting the winner, explaining in detail the astrological basis. These articles, like all my articles, are meant to be instructional. I want students to understand how and why I came to a particular conclusion using the many interpretive principles and predictive tools of Jyotiṣa.
Thus far, I have been fortunate to have been right five out of six times. The one time I failed was the 2016 election between Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump. My teacher, K.N. Rao, use to say that you learn the most from your failed predictions, and that was certainly the case for me. One thing I learned is not to predict when there is uncertainty about the birth chart. Back then no birth time from a written record existed for Hilary Clinton, and both she and her mother had given out different times on different occasions. The other lesson learned was not to let your own bias cloud your astrological judgement. Though I saw that he was running a very strong rāja-yoga– giving period (Rahu-Mars) at the time of the election, it was inconceivable to me that a man like Donald Trump could be elected President. I convinced myself that it just meant he would make a stronger than expected showing.
I also misjudged the Jupiter period, which he had moved into at the time of the inauguration. I didn’t think Jupiter had any source of the strength, but overlooked the fact that it was station point at birth, which makes a planet extremely powerful. This is when a planet appears to stand still at the same degree for a period of days when it is going either from direct to retrograde or retrograde to direct.
But my worst failing was with respect to Jupiter in his daśāṁśa.
Here it is giving the result of both nīcabhanga rāja yoga and Gaja Kesarī Yoga. The real irony of this is that in my book, Secrets of the Daśāṁśa, I highlight and illustrate how these two conditions in D-10 can really mark a time of significant career rise. In other words, I turned a blind eye to my own teaching!
My feelings about Trump as a Presidential candidate have not changed. They have, in fact, gotten far worse. If he were to become President again I would consider it among the worst tragedies to ever befall this country, right behind the American Civil War, and akin to his first term as President. But hopefully, this time I will not let my bias cloud my judgment. He remains enormously popular among the majority of Republicans to the point of cultish, slavish devotion, and I am quite cognizant of the fact that he could possibly win the next election based on the current polling.
However, polling, and all the political commentary currently taking place and obsessively covered in the media, is also a potential pitfall. An astrologer cannot allow him or herself to be influenced by this. Judgment should be made strictly on the basis of the astrological factors, which is what this article is all about.
The Republican Ticket
For the third time in a row, Donald Trump is the Republican nominee for President, and without facing any serious challenge from other candidates in the primaries. His complete domination and hold over the party, even in the face of so many criminal indictments, actual convictions, and judgements against him in multiple civil cases, is extraordinary and unprecedented. Never before has anyone convicted of 34 felonies been a candidate. It is his Jupiter major period that is giving him such paradoxical results.
When interpreting any major period, it must be seen from three different perspectives:
- From the birth lagna
- From the Moon
- From daśā lagna
- From the ascendant, Leo, Jupiter is a powerful 5th and 8th lord in the 2nd Its sign lord is Mercury, the 2nd and 11th lord svakṣetra in the 11th house. This is a very wealth- giving astrological picture. Trump has always exaggerated his wealth, but, regardless, his current net worth is estimated to be around $4.5 billion.
- From the Moon in Scorpio, Jupiter becomes the 2nd and 5th lord in the 11th house, again forming a really substantial dhana yoga. The significance of Jupiter falling in the 11th house of unearned gains from the Moon is how effective he has been at the fund-raising so essential for successful political campaigns. He has the financial backing of many billionaires, who are contributing many millions to his campaign, including Elon Musk, the richest man in the world.
- It is only from daśā lagna, using Virgo as the ascendant, that Jupiter gives rāja yoga as the 7th lord in the 1st, and this is quite important to see. He was the U.S. President for four years in Jupiter, and the question now is whether it can make him President again.
One important point as to why it did so and may again, is a principle I refer to as Udu’s Clue, about which I wrote an article. Udu refers to the nakṣatra placement of a planet, and Udu’s Clue refers to the results that its lord gives. The nakṣatra lord provides a big clue as to some additional results a major period can give. In this case, Trump’s Jupiter is in Citra nakṣatra, ruled by Mars. Mars is his yogakāraka 9th and 4th lord, placed right on the degree of the ascendant and in the royal sign of Leo and the royal nakṣatra of Maghā, whose symbol is a throne. This is a big astrological reason why Jupiter gave him the Presidency and why he has been able to maintain his political status and power even while out of office. This is all of the favorable side.
The other side comes from Jupiter’s status as a primary māraka, being in the 2nd house and with the affliction of Saturn, a natural malefic and a bad functional one for his Leo lagna, since it rules the 6th and the māraka 7th house. Additionally, Saturn is in the 12th.
Jupiter, as a good 5th trine lord and an impressionable 8th lord for his Leo lagna will give almost exclusively good results if well-placed and well associated. The very negative indications that an 8th lord can give will be suppressed. However, if it gets impressed by Saturn as a natural malefic and 6th and 7th lord, they will manifest.. Here is a list of just some of the misfortunes that he suffered in his Jupiter-Saturn period.
- Was hospitalized for Covid, and it has come out that his condition was much more serious than was publicized at the time.
- Became the only President to be impeached twice by the S House of Representatives.
- Lost the 2020 election, one of few incumbents to do
- Lost 67 court cases challenging the outcome of the 2020 election.
- Committed all the acts for which he is now facing many criminal indictments. If convicted he could be sentenced to prison.
Depending on his āyus (longevity), this Jupiter period, which runs up to age 86, could be one in which he passes. The Laghu Parāśārī, a small Sanskrit classic on which I wrote a commentary, states that natural benefics in the 2nd or 7th house “become the surest killers” But let me be clear that I am not predicting this, nor wishing that it will happen. I am just highlighting the danger of such periods. In Jupiter-Ketu, with Ketu giving the results of a debilitated and afflicted 12th lord Moon, he just recently survived an assassination attempt in which a bullet grazed his ear. It was a close brush with death.
Starting in August 2024 he will enter Jupiter-Venus, and this is the period/sub-period in which he will contest the election, and if he wins, be sworn in as President. One very interesting thing to note about Saturn and Venus is their placement in Punarvasu nakṣatra in strength, since they are both vargottama. Puna in Sanskrit means “again.” One of the themes of this nakṣatra is “re- occurrence.” Something happens, and then happens again. In Jupiter-Saturn, Trump was impeached and then impeached again. Now in Jupiter-Venus he is a Presidential nominee for the third time.
Just like with any mahādaśā, a sub-period lord must be analyzed from both the birth lagna and the Moon, and in particular, from its position from the major period lord (daśā lagna).
- From the birth lagna, Venus is the 3rd and 10th lord in the 12th house afflicted by Saturn as a 6th This is a Dur Yoga, defined by when the 10th lord goes into a Trik house (6, 8, or 12) and with the additional influence of natural malefics. If you were to judge the Jupiter- Venus period based on this alone, it would suggest that Trump is a clear loser. You might even think it could be a period that could put him in prison, or at least under house arrest, given this placement in the 12th with Saturn.
- Yet, Jupiter-Venus looks completely different from the Moon. Jupiter becomes the 5th lord of the authority to rule in the 11th house of victory, and vargottama Venus becomes the 7th lord in the 9th house, giving rāja yoga by placement. Saturn, with whom it is conjunct, becomes a vargottama 4th lord of the seat of power in the 9th If you judged from this perspective alone, you could conclude that he will win.
- Using Jupiter’s position in Virgo as a daśā lagna, Venus become an excellent 9th lord in the 11th house of victory with a vargottama 5th lord, giving a powerful trikoṅa rāja/dhana This perspective again looks very good for Trump.
When you encounter such a confusing and disparate astrological picture, I have been asked many times by students how you reconcile the difference and predict accurately. My answer is that all these different potentials will play out in some way in his Jupiter-Venus period.
However, Trump is either going to win the election and become President again…or not. So, a judgment must be made as to one or the other. In which case, the condition and placement of these planets in D-10 also become a very important consideration.
In my book, Secrets of the Daśāṁśa, I highlight how the period and sub-period of planets in some special condition in this varga, whether or not they are connected, can bring very significant developments in a person’s career life. It applies to Trump’s D-10 where Jupiter is nīcabhanga and Venus is an exalted lagna lord. It is important to note, however, that this is more likely to be true if these same planets hold a similar promise in the birth chart.
Alternative Planetary Daśās
When zeroing in on a predicting a specific event, K.N. Rao oftentimes applied as many as five daśās, both planetary and sign-based. The reason is that you are looking for confluence. You are looking to see if different daśās are all showing the potential for the same event in the same timeframe, although they may do so in very different ways. I have used the analogy of a Las Vegas slot machine in which all the symbols line up indicting that you have hit the jackpot.
Yoginī is another all-purpose planetary daśā that can be used with any birth chart, though it is a much shorter cycle of 36 years versus the 120 years of Vimśhottarī. It is used in exactly the same way as all planetary daśās.
At the time of the election and inauguration, Trump will be running Saturn-Mercury in Yoginī.
It can also be very helpful to employ any conditional planetary daśās that might apply to a birth chart. In predicting that Joe Biden would win the 2020 election, I employed the Śaśtihayanī daśā that applies to his horoscope because his 10th lord is in the 1st house.
At the time of the election, he was running Sun-Jupiter in this conditional daśā. The Sun is the 10th lord in the 1st house with a benefic, and Jupiter is an exalted, vargottama 5th lord aspecting the Sun. They form a 5-10 combination, which looked like a real winner to me.
Two conditional planetary daśās apply to Trump’s birth chart:
- Śodśottarī dasa which applies when the lagna is in the Sun’s horā and the Moon is waxing or the lagna is in the Moon’s horā and the Moon is waning. These conditions exist in approximately 50% of birth charts, making it the most widely applicable of all the conditional nakṣatra-based dasas.
- Śat Trimśat Sama dasa which applies when the birth is in the daytime and the ascendant degree is in the Sun’s horā, or at night in the Moon’s hora. It occurs is 11.11% of the
From the graphic below, it can be seen that at the time of the election and inauguration:
- In Śodśottarī he will be running Venus-Moon
- In Śat Trimśat Sama it will be Jupiter-Rahu
Does the timing in any of these three additional planetary daśās support the case for Trump winning the Presidency again? I will let the reader decide.
The Jaimini Perspective
Knowing the Jaimini system and being able to evaluate the question in a totally different way becomes especially valuable in such cases as this.
Before considering timing in Jaimini, some static potentials pertaining to Trump’s horoscope must be highlighted first.
His kārakāṁśa lagna is Virgo from where Mercury is the 10th lord in the 10th and only receives the sign aspect of a strong Jupiter. This is a combination given in the Jaimini Sūtras for someone who has sustained success in their profession. Note that Mercury is the MK pertaining to real estate. For most of his professional life, Trump was a real estate mogul.
Even more significantly, there is a śloka from Parāśāra Horā that indicates that when there are only strong benefics in the angles from KL, a person becomes “a king.” Trump first won the Presidency in his Gemini period in Cara daśā, activating these potentials. With the MK in Gemini, it resulted in him moving into a special dwelling called the White House.
The sub-period was Cancer, in which there are multiple Jaimini rāja yoga formations. Saturn is a vargottama DK getting the sign aspect of AK Sun and AmK Moon, and the AmK Moon also rules Cancer. Additionally, there is the special Jaimini rāja/dhana yoga created by the Moon- Venus combination by sign aspect.
Moreover, Cancer is his Ghatika lagna (GL), a special ascendant related to status and power. By being associated with the GL and also the Horā lagna (HL) pertaining to wealth, the Moon, Saturn, and Venus all become partial yogādas (yoga-makers), planets in the Jaimini system especially capable of giving wealth, status and power. This is how and why from the Jaimini perspective Gemini-Cancer in Cara daśā made him President. This was in 2016.
In 2018, he moved into the Cancer major period, which encompassed two of the years when he was President. But Cancer as a sign-period holds some other potentials as well.
- It is the 12th house of the birth chart
- It gets the influence of three natural malefics, Saturn, Rahu-Ketu
- It is occupied by Saturn as the 6th lord and Venus as the GK
All the misfortunes outlined previously occurred in this period, including the hospitalization for Covid, the two impeachments and loss of the 2020 election. All the legal difficulties that have arisen since he left office and which currently plague him have been in this Cancer major period. This is a reflection of a 12th house containing the 6th lord Saturn and the GK with additional affliction.
Yet, here he is again in the Cancer major period, the Republican presidential nominee. Cancer as a sub-period gave him the Presidency, will it give it to him again as a major period? If so, a lot of the more serious federal criminal indictments against him would go away. He would just appoint an Attorney General who would dismiss these cases. Many political pundits have speculated that one of the main reasons that Trump is running again is to get out from under the shadow of these federal cases that have the potential of putting him in prison.
It will be Cancer-Virgo in Cara daśā when the election and inauguration will be held. You can make the case that this Virgo sub-period looks good for Trump, as it is the kārakāṁśa lagna with only the influence of two strong benefics. As a sub-period, it activates that “king-making” combination referred to earlier. The major period, Cancer, is the 11th house for KL.
Padanādhaṁśa daśā is another sign-based daśā employed by K.N. Rao. It is unique in that it is calculated and interpreted solely on the basis of the navāṁśa.
Here AmK Moon in a sign aspect with AK Sun form a very good Jaimini rāja yoga along the 4- 10 axis of D-9. PK Mars and DK Saturn form another rāja yoga.
At the time of the election and inauguration he will be running Libra-Sagittarius in PND. And it looks rather strong. From Libra the 10th house has two vargottama planets, the DK-PK rāja yoga is operative, and there is the additional influence of the natural benefic, Mercury. From Sagittarius, the AK-AmK rāja yoga falls along the 4-10 axis.
The Birth Chart of JD Vance
The prevailing political wisdom is that Vice Presidential candidates do not impact Presidential elections, and apparently there is a lot of statistical evidence to back this up. As an astrologer, I beg to differ in one respect. If a VP candidate has a birth chart that clearly and unequivocally shows an elevation in status at the time of the election/inauguration, then it can become an important consideration.
In July of 2019 I published an article about the birth chart of Kamala Harris entitled Rising Political Star. In it I predicted an elevation in her political status in her Rahu-Mercury period which began in July of 2020. Shortly after entering this period, Biden picked her as his running mate. Her birth chart, and the strength of her Rahu-Mercury period, was a significant factor in my prediction that the Biden-Harris ticket would win in 2020.
Trump has selected a Republican Senator from Ohio, JD Vance, as his running mate. His birth chart and the current periods clearly shows his elevation to this new, higher status.
It was in his Jupiter major period, the 5th lord in the 5th house, that he became a U.S. Senator in the Rahu sub-period, exalted in the 10th house. Earlier in Jupiter he had gained some literary fame for his memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which became a New York Times bestseller. Both Jupiter and the 5th house pertain to authorship. Jupiter in D-10 is in its own sign in an angle and a component of Sarasvatī Yoga. Much of the book was written in Jupiter-Mercury and its success in publication came in Jupiter-Venus.
In April of 2024 he moved into Saturn-Saturn and this is the period that has made him a VP candidate. Will it also make him the Vice-President? Saturn is an exalted 7th lord. When studying with K.N. Rao, I heard him frequently mention that the 7th house/7th lord can give a person a career elevation since the 7th house is the 10th from the 10th. His Saturn is additionally conjunct yogakāraka Mars, forming a 7-9 angle-trine rāja yoga. From the Moon in Virgo, they do not form a good combination at all, but from daśā lagna, Libra, Saturn becomes an exalted yogakāraka 4th and 5th lord. In D-10 Saturn gets directional strength in the 7th angle and is with svakṣetra Jupiter.
The Jaimini rāja yoga in his horoscope is formed by the conjunction of Saturn as the PK and Mars as the AmK. At the time of the election/inauguration, Vance will be running Aquarius- Capricorn. Aquarius receives the aspect of the AmK-PK rāja yoga, is ruled by one of the components, and the AmK falls in the good 9th house from there. From the sub-period Capricorn, this combination falls 10th. Based on the composite picture of Saturn-Saturn and Aquarius- Capricorn, you could make the case that he will become the Vice-President.
But now here is the thing about candidates for either position. The mere fact that they are the candidates means that they are running periods that will reflect that status and the intense spotlight that gets shone upon them in the run up to the election. For a period of time, they become the most famous and talked about people in the country. Their past history, everything they do, and everything they say, gets obsessively reported and commented upon in the media.
So, the astrological question then becomes…who is running the strongest periods…both at the time of the election/inauguration and subsequently when they would be the President and Vice- President. One might think that this would be easy to determine, but it is not always so in my experience.
The Democratic Ticket
Back in 2019 when I was first seeing the birth chart of Kamala Harris, she was already a U.S. Senator from California, a significant political position. But it appeared to me that she would rise higher, though at the time I could not say exactly what that would mean. In 2020 she initially campaigned against Joe Biden as a Presidential candidate herself. But after some initial success in the primaries, her campaigned fizzled out and her funding dried up. But as stated earlier, her Rahu-Mercury period clearly showed a rise, and she became the Vice-President.
At that time, looking ahead to the next election year in 2024, I saw that she would be running Rahu-Venus. This also looked to me like a period that could raise her even higher. My thought at that time was, “What could this mean?” My next thought was, “Am I looking at the birth chart of the first woman President of the United States?”
Rahu-Venus has, in fact, given her another elevation because in this period she has become the Democratic Presidential candidate after Joe Biden was pressured to step aside following a disastrous debate performance against Trump.
Before explaining Rahu-Venus giving her another career rise, I first want to comment on her Rahu major period.
Rahu is in the 1st house, strong in its mūlatrikoṇa sign, Gemini. But the thing that really needs to be seen about it is its very close conjunction to the degree of the ascendant. As a result, it continues to fall in the ascendant in 15 out of 16 divisional charts. Moreover, it remains in Gemini in five of those vargas, including D-10, making Rahu one very powerful graha. In the
chapter on rāja yogas in Parāśāra Horā, there is a śloka that states that when a planet falls in the ascendant of the śad vargas (a group of six divisional charts), it creates a rāja yoga.
Being a chāya graha, Rahu gives the results of planets with which it is associated, as well as its sign lord. In her birth chart Rahu is not associated with any planets. Its sign lord, Mercury is the 1st lord in the 5th house, giving rāja yoga by placement. It is with the Sun, planet of government and governmental authority, and gets the additional influence of a perfectly full Moon. This, along with the placement of Rahu and Mercury in D-10, is why I thought Rahu-Mercury had to give her an elevation.
I thought Rahu-Venus had to elevate her further because:
- Venus is the 5th lord in its own nakṣatra and in an exchange with the Sun, canceling the Sun’s debility and giving both a source of
- It forms a trikoṅa rāja/dhana yoga with the 9th lord, Saturn mūlatrikoṇa.
- From the Moon, Venus goes to the 5th house and the exchange with the Sun becomes a 5- 7 rāja yoga.
- Since Rahu is in the ascendant, the birth lagna and daśā lagna are the same when she runs this major period.
- In D-10, Venus is again the 5th lord, it is well placed in the 11th house aspecting its own 5th house, and without any malefic influence.
As students hear me say repeatedly, one of the terms used for the 5th house in Parāśāra Horā is rājya, meaning the authority to rule. This is why K.N. Rao frequently referred to the 5th house as “the house of the Prime Minister.” Planets in the 5th house like her Mercury and Sun, and planets ruling the 5th house, like her Venus, can put a person in leadership positions with the authority to rule when they are in strength and are configured in rāja yogas. This is true of her Mercury, Venus and Sun. Being nīchabhanga and falling in a trine, the Sun becomes a nīcabhanga rāja yoga-giving planet in its own right.
Rahu-Venus has brought an elevation. It has made her a Presidential candidate. Now the larger question is whether it can actually elevate her to this highest office in the land. Can it make her the first woman President in the history of the United States?
Let us look now at what the Jaimini system has to say about that.
There are three significant Jaimini rāja yogas in her horoscope based on the association of the special kārakas based on degrees:
- PK Sun is associated with AmK Venus by sign aspect
- AK Mars is associated with DK Jupiter
- The Moon and Venus form the special Jaimini rāja/dhana yoga by sign
The Moon-Venus combination is especially potent since both are quite strong due to the exchanges in which they are involved, and the Moon is perfectly full.
Back in 2020, one of the reasons that I thought she would become Vice-President is because in Cara daśā at the time of the inauguration she would be running Libra-Aries, two signs which activate her Jaimini rāja yogas.
Her elevation to Presidential candidate has occurred in Libra-Leo, and this remains in effect during the time of the coming election and inauguration.
- Libra is the 5th house of rājya.
- It contains a nīcabhanga Sun, kāraka of governmental authority
- The AmK-PK rāja yoga is formed between Libra and Leo
- Leo falls in the 11th house from Libra and activates both the AmK-PK and Moon-Venus combination
- At the time of the election, she will be running Libra-Leo-Aries
What other conclusion can be drawn from this astrological picture but that it looks very strong?
Alternative Daśās
The current Yoginī daśā, and sub-periods over the next four years are as follows:
- Rahu-Mars
- Rahu-Mercury
- Rahu-Saturn
- Rahu-Venus
Aside from their position in the birth chart, go back and see the placement of all these planets in D-10.
The Śodśottarī daśā also applies to her horoscope and at the time of the election/ inauguration, the sequence will be Venus-Mercury. See the placement and lordship again of these planets in both the birth chart and daśāṁśa. Is this not confluence?
In her navāṁśa, AmK Venus, PK Sun and DK Jupiter continue to form Jaimini rāja yogas. The Padanādhaṁśa daśā at the time of the election will be Virgo-Capricorn and Virgo-Leo at the time of the inauguration. Th 5th house from Virgo becomes strong and Capricorn does activate the Jaimini rāja yogas in her D-9. From Leo the 4th house has the rāja yogas. However, I would not declare her the winner just based on this astrological picture.
The Special Significance of Venus Rahu/Rahu-Venus Periods
Many years ago, I wrote two articles on the special significance of these periods/sub-periods. One had to do with how often they bring a love affair into a person’s life, sometimes leading to marriage, and I have successfully predicted on this basis many times.
I learned this from K.N. Rao. However, he also spoke of it as a time when something very significant could happen with regards to the unfolding of a person’s destiny, some particular fateful event or defining moment in their life. It will not always be so, but I have come across a large number of instances when it was true, and I wrote a second article highlighting this. Here are some examples of momentous events that occurred when the person was running either Rahu-Venus or Venus-Rahu.
- Mohammed Ali first became heavyweight boxing champion of the world
- William Rehnquist became Supreme Court Justice of the United States
- The current Dalai Lama was recognized as such in his childhood
- Napoleon Bonaparte became First Consul of France
- Jane Austen wrote the first draft or her famous novel, Pride and Prejudice
- Stephen Curry led his team to a NBA Championship and was named MVP
- Swimmer, Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time
- Victor Hugo wrote his masterpiece, Les Miserable.
- Jack Welch became the legendary CEO of General Electric Corporation
- Eddie Fisher became a hugely popular singer in the 1950s in the S.
- British actress Vivian Leigh played her iconic role of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind
- Actresses Sophia Loren, Susan Sarandon and Uma Thurman became stars
- Lauren Hutton, Cheryl Tiegs and Claudia Schiffer became supermodels
- Dick Cavett first aired his own talk show on ABC, a major TV network
- Tennis star, John McEnroe had his best season when he compiled an astonishing 82-3 record that still stands today as the best ever for men’s
- Narendranath Datta first experienced nirvikalpa samādhi, a very high meditative state, and was ordained Swami Vivekananda by his famous guru, Ramakrishna Paramahāmsa
- Nancy Reagan became First Lady of California
I could site many more examples, but let these suffice to make the point. I was reminded of this astrological phenomenon when Kamala Harris unexpectedly became the Presidential nominee for the Democrats just a few months before the election. My thought was “Will Rahu-Venus also prove to be a life-defining and history-making time in her life?”
The Birth Chart of Tim Walz
The problem with the birth chart of Tim Walz is that it is unknown, which is say there is no birth time available. I keep hoping one will surface, but to date none has. What is known is that he was born on April 6, 1964 in West Point, Nebraska USA. This information is not entirely useless since in the 24 hour-period of April 6 of that year, the Moon stays in Capricorn, such that the planetary patterning from Candra lagna can be seen.
I am showing two Moon charts here, one constructed for a minute after midnight, and one for 11:59 PM, which would be the whole range of the Moon in a 24-hour period. It can be seen that on that day the range of Moon’s degrees are from 4-23 of Capricorn to 16-49. Fortunately, this means that we can know the current Vimśhottarī daśā, which is Saturn. The range means that he could be running anywhere from Saturn-Venus to Saturn-Rahu.
Knowing the current major period also makes it possible to view the chart from daśā lagna, using Saturn’s placement in Aquarius as an ascendant. From this lagna and Candra lagna it is not difficult to see why the Saturn major period has made him the Governor of Minnesota and now a Vice-Presidential candidate. In either case, Saturn becomes a strong 1st lord in its mūlatrikoṇa sign, and Venus becomes a strong yogakāraka, either the 5th and 10th lord in the 5th, or the 9th and 4th lord in the 4th.
It is quite regrettable though the we don’t know the correct birth lagna or current sub-period with which to judge the likelihood of his becoming the Vice-President of the United States.
The Iyer D-11
After K.N. Rao, H.R. Seshadri Iyer is the other astrological author that greatly influenced my approach to prediction, especially when is comes to the use of divisional charts. In his book, New Techniques of Prediction – Part Two, he gives 37 principles for predicting with the vargas and then illustrates these. I once wrote a commentary giving my own illustrations and found most of the principles working very well.
Besides the 16 divisions given in Parāśāra Horā, Iyer used Tajika divisions such as D-6, D-8 and D-11. He used D-11 in keeping with the meaning of the 11th house as lābha bhava, or “house of gains.” See this comment from his book:
“Division 10 represents earned income (from career) while D-11 represents unearned income such as patrimony, easy income, side income, lottery, gambling etc.”
Iyer used this division with respect to other meanings of the 11th house as well, like honors, awards and victory, and therefore to predict the outcome of elections. I once tested this division on 100 horoscopes to see for myself if it could be used in these ways. The problem with such a test is that Iyer puts an all-important emphasis on the placement of planets in the houses relative to the lagna of a division. According to his theory, a planet will give good results in a division if it is placed in angles or trines, and bad results if it is placed in duḥsthāna houses. 2 and 11th are regarded as more neutral.
However, house placement all depends on the correct lagna of that varga, which in turn depends on an accurate degree of birth lagna, which in turn depends on an accurate time of birth. Given the likelihood of minor inaccuracies in even recorded birth times, one can never be absolutely certain that the birth time is giving an accurate D11 lagna. This is true for D-10 and other finer divisions as well, which is the problem when trying to predict with vargas in general.
Presuming this is the correct Iyer D11 for Kamala Harris, and that it is a relevant division for judging the outcome of an election, the Vimśottarī daśā of Rahu-Venus looks very good for her. Rahu is in the lagna with the benefic Jupiter, and Venus is in the 5th house vargottama, with the aspect of two other benefics, Jupiter and Mercury. There is no malefic influence.
Harris became Vice-President in Rahu-Mercury, with Mercury in the 11th house with the aspect of the benefic, Venus, and again without malefic influence.
Presuming again that this is Donald Trump’s correct D-11, it can be seen that Jupiter is strong in angle in the sign of a Great Friend, and it was in Jupiter-Jupiter that he became President. He lost in 2020 in Jupiter-Saturn, with Saturn debilitated in a mild duḥsthāna. Now it will be Jupiter- Venus, with Venus again in the 3rd, though not debilitated.
If judging the outcome of the election based on D-11 and the Vimśottarī daśā, Kamala Harris would have to be declared the winner.
Transits
The three primary components of any prediction are:
- Static potential
- Activation of that static potential in the daśā systems
- Supportive transits
K.N. Rao referred to transits as “the clincher,” but emphasized that they are subordinate to daśās. In this book, Ups and Downs in Career, he showed the use of the transits of Jupiter and Saturn for marking career rise. They should be simultaneously influencing the 10th house or 10th lord from the birth lagna or the Moon. If in retrograde motion, they should be seen as aspecting also from the previously sign.
At the time of the election Jupiter will be retrograde in Taurus in the 10th house of Donald Trump, and conjunct the 10th lord Sun from the Moon. Saturn will be retrograde in Aquarius making aspect onto the 10th house Leo from the Moon, and if taken as aspecting from Capricorn, it would aspect Venus, the 10th lord from the birth lagna.
This transit picture would remain the same for the inauguration except that Saturn will have gone direct.
Since JD Vance’s ascendant is also Leo, Jupiter will be transiting his 10th house as well, and since his 10th lord is also Venus in Cancer, Saturn aspecting as if in Capricorn would make this connection. From the Moon his 10th lord is Mercury in Leo, which would get the aspect of transiting retrograde Jupiter and transiting Saturn in Aquarius.
For Kamala Harris, transiting Jupiter in Taurus has returned to its place of birth, with Jupiter being her 10th lord. Transiting Saturn has also returned to its place of birth, and when retrograde it will aspect as if in Capricorn on to her 10th house, Pisces. Capricorn is the 10th house from the Moon and is also getting this simultaneous influence.
However, since she is experiencing Jupiter and Saturn returning to their signs at birth, which happens to everyone around age 60, some special mention must be made about this.
In his book Ups and Downs in Career, K.N Rao discusses this time period, which goes by the name of śasti pūrti, and comments on its impact as follows:
- Twelve instances have been given how the rise in one’s career takes place at the age of sixty or, around
- Six instances have been shown how the “unexpected’ happens at the age of sixty, be it a pilgrimage, marriage, or steep rise in one’s political
- Seven instances have been given to show how fortunes can decline suddenly
What exactly the śasti-pūrti will mean for an individual depends on the static potential of the birth chart, and the daśās operating at the time. K.N Rao worked on the birth charts of numerous politicians who took predictions from him, and he observed how often the period of the śasti- pūrti coincided with a precipitous career rise. This came to mind when I saw that Kamala Harris is in this transit period.
Tim Waltz, who was born just six months before Kamala Harris in 1964, has recently been in this period, with his Jupiter in Aries rather than Taurus. For him, we can only see these transits from the Moon. In which case, Jupiter in Taurus is transiting the sign of the 10th lord Venus from there, and retrograde Saturn, aspecting as if from Capricorn, would aspect Libra, the 10th house from Capricorn.
The Aṣtakavarga system of Jyotiṣa is primarily a method for qualifying transits, so the totals for Jupiter in Taurus, and Saturn in Aquarius should be seen for all four of these individuals.
Every sign in a birth chart will have a total number of benefic points, and an individual total for each planet. 27/28 is considered average/base line strength in terms of total points, and a planet can have anywhere from 0 to 8 individual points. The theory is that the higher the totals the more favorable the transit.
Donald Trump
Taurus: 34 total/5 for Jupiter
Aquarius: 28 total/3 for Saturn
JD Vance
Taurus: 38 total/6 for Jupiter
Aquarius: 23 total/4 for Saturn
Kamala Harris
Taurus: 27 total/5 for Jupiter
Aquarius: 30 total/1 for Saturn
Tim Walz
Taurus: 23 total/5 for Jupiter
Aquarius: 29 total/3 for Saturn
Taurus is the 10th house for both Trump and Vance and Jupiter’s transit through Taurus has exceptional aṣtakavarga totals for both of them. If judging the outcome of the election just based on this consideration, one would be inclined to say that the Republican ticket will win.
However, there is the simultaneous influence of Jupiter and Saturn on the 10th house/10th lord from the birth lagna or the Moon for all four of these individuals, so that alone is not a differentiator. This is to say that they all have these supportive transits, though Jupiter’s transit in the 10th house of Trump and Vance is clearly stronger/better qualified.
Summing Up
As a body of knowledge, Jyotiṣa is often referred to a vast ocean. There are so many techniques of interpretation and so many methods/tools for predicting that you can quickly feel like you are drowning. When attempting to take so much data into account, such as five daśā systems as I have done here, you can easily begin to lose sight of the forest for the trees. In Parāśāra Horā one of the qualifications given for being a good astrologer is the ability to weigh up different factors, synthesize them, and make a judgement accordingly. It is no simple matter. Given what I have laid out here for both sets of candidates, you could argue a strong case for either of them.
But I keep coming back to one thing over and over again that I have not mentioned yet. If Kamala Harris loses, her birth chart and the current periods would have to show a loss of position. She would no longer hold any office, unlike JD Vance who will continue to be a Senator if the Republicans lose. Conversely, subsequent periods over the next four years would have to show her in a very powerful, high-status political position. So, with this in mind, I will conclude this article by reviewing again what her birth chart and current periods indicate this way.
Vimśhottarī
Now, and for the next four years, the daśā sequence is:
- Rahu-Venus
- Rahu-Sun
- Rahu-Moon
All three of these sub-period lords are connected to the 5th house and have sources of strength, and they form rāja yogas either from the birth lagna or the Moon.
Yoginī
- Rahu-Mars
- Rahu-Mercury
- Rahu-Saturn
- Rahu-Venus
Rāja yogas related to her 5th house/5th lord of the birth chart are being activated and all these sub- period lords are placed in angles in D-10
Cara
- Libra-Leo
- Libra-Virgo
- Libra-Libra
These periods continue to activate the Jaimini rāja yogas related to the 5th house of the birth chart.
I am highlighting these two planetary daśās and the one sign-based daśā because it is by using these three together that I have made my most successful predictions over the past 30 years.
They decidedly do not show a loss of position, but rather a sustained high status with the authority to rule (5th house!).
Therefore, I predict that Kamala Harris will make history and become the first woman President of the United States in this upcoming…Election 2024.
