Article by Iranganti Rangacharya
Chara Paryaya Dasa is dealt with in Jatakasara Sangraha of Raghavabhatta, in Sutrardha Prakasika of Nrisimha Suri and in Laxmana Vyakya.
If the Janma Lagna or the Ascendant is occupied by Jupiter or Mercury or Atmakaraka use this dasa from Ascendant. If the 5th house is occupied by any of these planets use the Dasa from the 5th house. Similar is the case with the 9th house.
If the first or starting Dasa sign is movable, the Dasa reckoning should be regular. If it is fixed, the Dasa should be in the order of every 6th. If it is dual sign, the dasa is in the order of Kendras, Panaparas next and then the Apoklimas follow. If the beginning Dasa is an odd sig, the order should be reversed.
Dasa Varsha: The Dasa years should be counted from the Dasa sign to the Atmakaraka and the planets in the Kandras, Panaparas and Apoklimas from the Atmakaraka. The count should be direct of the Dasa sign is odd and reverse, if it is even.

The Atmakaraka is Saturn and Darakaraka is Moon in Chart 5. The Ascendant is Makara occupied by Mercury. But the 9th from the Ascendant is occupied by Jupiter and Ketu. Since the 9th sign Kanya is a dual sign, occupied by two planets, Charaparyaya Dasa begins from the 9th, that is, from Kanya and not from Makara occupied by Mercury alone. Hence the Dasas are as follows.
- Kanya – Saturn (AK) – 7 years
- Mithuna – Venus – 10 years
- Meena – Rahu – 12 years
- Dhanu – Moon – 7 years
- Simha – Jupiter – 2 years

The Dwara, Bahya signs should be taken into consideration in timing of events like marriage, job etc., particularly in Charaparyaya, Sthira Paryaya and Trikona Dasas. This is the opinion of Vriddhas.
