Central Star

THERE IS no exaggeration in saying that everything in the Universe is governed by stars including the sport of horse racing. The ceaseless celestial activity of planets and their associated stars produces multiple vibrations in the universe. One such vibration is between the Moon and Mercury which occasionally affects the sport of horse-racing leading to tumultuous swings in the form of equines. This article, besides unraveling certain astrological clues, is intended to unfold an interesting phenomenon concerning horse races.

Hindu Astrology relies primarily on Nakshatras. There are innumerable Nakshatras in the Milky Way Galaxy. Of these, 27 asterisms (group of stars) are segregated by Hindu sages, given different names and further arranged into 9 groups of three stars each headed by a planet.

While arranging these star groups, a well designed and systematic order was adopted in that the disposition of the shadowy planets, namely, the Moon’s North Node (Rahu or Dragon’s Head) and South Node (Ketu or Dragon’s Tail) were given special attention. Rahu’s stars are flanked by those of Mars and Jupiter and Ketu’s stars have on their wings those related to Mercury and Venus. As a corollary to this, these Nodes partake the character of the adjacent stars and give results accordingly, whenever circumstances demand.

This arrangement broadly conforms to the scientific finding that there is a central star for each planet and some planets are part of a star cluster. The stars arranged in seriatim spread over the entire Zodiac of 12 signs (Aries to Pisces) leads to automatic formation of a mystic a Grand Trine of each group establishing interaction between themselves (Table 1).

Science acknowledges that nuclear reaction takes place inside the stars and that the high electric and magnetic fields present in the galaxies act as natural accelerators. For this reason, when the influence of one of the stars in a group is examined, the other two stars within the group should also be considered to ascertain the combined effect.

1. Concept of Controlling Stars

According to the phenomena observed, the following assignment (Table 2) has been found to be useful and yielding good results when applied to horse racing. For each ruling star (i.e., the one transited by Moon at the time of racing) there is a:

• Controlling Star (CS).
• Star governing short distance races (i.e., distance upto 1400 metres and abbreviated as SDR).
• Star governing long distance races (i.e., distance of 1600 metres and beyond abbreviated as LDR).

Ruling Star

The ruling star is the one transited by the Moon at the time of the races. Hence, the Rasi (Zodiac Sign) in which the ruling star is located assumes significance. The influence of the ruling star, more precisely its lord, manifests either by its numerical i.e., card/draw number/the total of both or by proxy (dispositor/significator) and at times by symbolism (name reaction).

Controlling Star

The controlling star is the fifth one reckoned from the ruling star and governs the race proceedings of the entire day. Hence, the relationship between the lords of the ruling star and the controlling star (CS) is of paramount importance.

Short Distance Races

The third star from the controlling star governs the short distance races (SDR).

Long Distance Races

The 9^th star from the controlling star governs the long distance races (LDR).

Planetary lord of these stars when strong give either the direct or the combined result.

Note: (A) – “Abhijit” is made up of the last 3° 20′ of Uttarashada and the 1^st degree of Sravana. Hence, it partakes the character of both these stars.

1. Concept of Atmakaraka

Jaimini astrology has been found very useful also in the applied field of horse racing. Though Atmakaraka (AK) planet is unique in itself, as far as racing is concerned a parallel can be drawn between the AK and the lord of the controlling star (CS).

In this context, verification of factors like the constellation lords of AK and the Cs, the signs occupied by them and the aspects they make or receive would be useful in deciding the probable winner.

As in the case of the ruling star (RS), the 5^th house from the Karakamsa throws light on the race proceedings. Similarly, the 3^rd from the 5^th, i.e., 7^th from Karakamsa (in respect of short distance races) have to be examined. On the same lines, the verification should extend to the rising Ascendants.

III. Concept of Core Stars

The cosmic layout contains a central portion known as core area. Each lunar mansion is built up by progressive mutation of the other accompanying stars forming into four graded squares. While computing this a small star by name “Abhijit” was interpolated between Uttarashada and Sravana for demarcating the boundaries precisely. The innermost square in this drawing is called the core area that contains the highly energized asterisms which have direct bearing on horse racing. The picturesque star abodes show casting the core star are given in Table 3.

Over a period of few decades, it has been observed that whenever the asterism pertaining to the Moon and Mercury in mutual opposition appear in the core area, the central nervous system is activated. Planets are known to exert their vibrations while constantly on the move. The radiational effect of stars and planets individually and jointly causes change in the metabolism of animate beings. In order to have a clear insight into the primordium governing the Moon – Mercury phenomenon, knowledge as to how stars in the core area of the cosmos get galvanized would be essential.

The Moon denoting the chest accommodates in her abode (Cancer) the  asterism Punarvasu (Jupiter), Pushyami (Saturn) and Aslesha (Mercury) – all signifying lungs. Saturn representing the bony system, legs and muscles accommodates in his sign (Capricorn) the asterisms – Uttarashada (Sun), Sravana (Moon) and Dhanishta (Mars) – all denoting shanks. The interaction between the Moon and Mercury (together with Saturn) either directly or through their associated asterisms of Saturn and Mercury are placed side by side emphasizing the role of the latter representing the sinew or nerve that joins the muscle to the bone. The Moon accommodating the asterism of both the planets in her sign Cancer and being the fastest amongst the planets, frequently interacts with all the other celestial bodies and elements in the cosmos. Further, the Moon acts as a catalyst and produces large forces of energy bringing the muscles to life and exert vigour such as running. Thus, the lung power required for horses is provided by the Moon whose influence on Mercury results in transition from childhood to maturity (adolescence). Due to the synthetizing influence of the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury, the aged gain an upper hand over youth, especially, the seven year old horses to win in races.

This rare phenomenon can be visualized in advance whenever:

• Stars belonging to the Moon and Mercury (Rohini, Hasta, Sravana and Aslesha, Jyestha and Revati) are present in the core area, especially when the ruling star is Aswini, Aridra, Pushyami, Hasta, Swati, Poorvashada and Uttarabhadra.
• The Moon and Mercury form mundane aspects (according to Western System).
• The Moon and Mercury aspect each other (conventional or Jaimini) in Rasi and or Navamsa, and
• The rising Ascendant and or the 7^th cusp falls in the asterism of the Moon, Mercury or Saturn.

The Tithi or lunar day is a very important conception in Hindu astronomy. Further, Nakshatras are also known as lunar mansions. The phenomenon under discussion is primarily lunar – based. The waning Moon’s sojourn, especially during the 5^th, 7^th and 9^th day has maximum incidence. At the same time the waxing Moon also needs watching. A few illustrations in the next part of this article will help understand my method better.

All the selections based on astrology should necessarily be corroborated by the form credentials of the runners to ensure maximum success in spotting winners. Astrology can supplement but not supplant the form selections. However, it forebodes the occurrence of adversities and impediments which cannot be visualized through any other system. Two Race Days

TWO RACE days one pertaining to a racing centre in India and the other in Dubai have been chosen to illustrate the concepts given in Part 1 of this article.

Race Day: 03-03-2002 (Sunday) Invitation Cup Day at Bangalore (India).

Chart

The moon changes to Pisces in Navamsa in the last race. The chart is based on Lahiri Ayaqnamsa. The planetary positions are for between 01.30p.m. (IST) and 06.00 p.m. IST covering 8 races.

Chart 1: Rasi: Aries – Mars 7; Taurus – Saturn 15 and Rahu 30; Gemini – Jupiter 12; Libra – Moon 14 to 17; Scorpio – Ketu 30; Capricorn – Mercury 24; Aquarius – Sun 19; and Pisces – Venus 0 – 13.

The ruling star is Swati (15) ruled by Rahu. The Tithi is Panchami (dark half); Atmakaraka: Mercury and Karakamsa : Gemini.

Mundane Aspects: Moon Square Neptune at 16h. 33m. (IST).

Zodical Aspects – Conventional: Mars aspects the Ascendant of races 4, 5, and 6, Moon and Ketu. Saturn together with Rahu aspects Ascendant, 4, 5, and 6, Ketu and Sun. Jupiter aspects the Moon and Sun.

Jaimini Aspects: Mars and Ketu (Frontal), Sun (Lateral) Ascendants 7 and 8 (Lateral). Saturn, Rahu and Moon (Frontal), Mercury (Lateral) and Ascendants 4,5 and 6 (Lateral). Mercury and Ketu (Lateral) and Ascendants 7 and 8 (Frontal).

Nature of the Race Day

1. From the planetary set up, it is seen that Jupiter, the Moon and Sun formed a grand trine, incidentally transiting Aridra, Swati (RS) and Satabhisha respectively. Rahu, thus afflicts the chief governors of racing (Sun and Jupiter). Rahu in the constellation of Mars in the 12^th portends a big blaze.
2. Atmakaraka Mercury is in the constellation of inimical Mars and both join the Karakamsa.

All these factors indicate that the day’s proceedings are likely to be affected adversely.

Verification of Races

Ketu, the lord of the controlling star was in Mercury’s constellation Jyeshta, one of the core stars. Mercury, Atmakaraka, and the planet denoting long distance races is predominant.

Poorvaphalguni, one of the core stars is associated with Venus, who is the dispositor of the Moon in Libra and of Saturn and Rahu in Taurus. Venus occupies the house of exaltation in the constellation of Jupiter.

Controlling Stars and Core Stars

(*SDR – Short Distance Races; *LDR – Long Distance Races).

Venus is the lord of the 5^th and 12^th in respect of Race Nos. 1, 2 and 3. He is the Lord of the 4^th and 11^th in respect of Race Nos. 4, 5 and 6 and the lord of the 3^rd and 10^th in respect of Race Nos. 7 and 8. Venus signifying Jupiter, the 9^th lord from Cancer (in respect of Races 4, 5 and 6), was very powerful.

Concept of Atmakaraka

All the delineations are based on Navamsa. Mercury is the Atmakaraka and Karakamsa is Gemini. Mars, the inimical lord of the 6^th from karakamsa joins Atmakaraka signifying evil and unfortunate trends. Mercury denotes nervous system and strength. Mercury conjoins Mars in Gemini and has frontal aspect with Saturn in Virgo involving barren signs and neutral planets, suggesting that male especially gelded animals come to the fore.

The 5^th house from Gemini is Libra that governs the sport. The 5^th lord Venus is in Pisces Rasi in the constellation of Jupiter, the lord of the 3^rd from the 5^th signifying SDR. The 9^th from the 5^th is Karakamsa, that is, Gemini containing Mercury and his enemy Mars on warpath suggesting most unexpected results in long distance races (Mercury incidentally is the significator of long distance races).

SDR I, II, III

The Ascendant (Rasi) is Gemini. Mercury (Ascendant lord) is in Capricorn, the 8^th house from the Ascendant, that too in the constellation of his enemy Mars. The 5^th house from the Ascendant is Libra occupied by the Moon. Lord of Libra Venus being in the constellation of Jupiter, the 7^th lord from Ascendant, is in the 10^th square its sign-dispositor. The Moon transiting the ruling star Swati has frontal aspect with Rahu and Saturn in Taurus.

The 3^rd house (denoting short distance races) from Libra is Sagittarius where no planet is posited. Jupiter, lord of the 7^th and 10^th from the Ascendant, is in the constellation of Rahu, in the 12^th from him and occupies the house of debilitation in Navamsa, losing its strength as a benefic. Venus though occupying exaltation house, its benign nature was vitiated because of being in Jupiter’s star and square Jupiter. As a consequence, these two planets were weak and unable to exert their direct influence on favorites.

1. Mumbai Trophy : 1.30 p.m. (1200 Mts)

Handicap Race

Total Runners 12: No 7 year old.

The Ascendant is Gemini 10° 02′ in the constellation of Rahu with Rahu in the 12^th form the Ascendant. Rahu in turn is in the constellation of Mars who was in the 12^th from Rahu. The Sun, the 3^rd lord in Rasi is in the 3^rd in Pisces from Navamsa Ascendant Capricorn. The Sun incidentally is the Karaka for short distance races.

Result : 1 (7) Pellalumma, b.f. 4, won as reckoned but not favorite and paid Rs. 64/- for Rs. 10/- on Tote.

Note: The card and draw number combination belongs to the Sun (Karaka for SDR) and Ketu (the Lord of controlling star). Rahu, the constellation lord of the Ascendant, gave the result of malefic Sun involved in the grand trine.

2. Chennai Trophy : 2.05 p.m. (1400 Mts)

Handicap Race

Total Runners 7: No 7 year old.

The Ascendant (Rasi) is Gemini 17° 59′ in the constellation of Rahu. The Navamsa Ascendant is Pisces. Rahu Vargottama in Taurus aspects Venus in Pisces (conventional) in Rasi and by the second lateral Jaimini aspect in Navamsa.

Result : 4 (6) Taipan, b. g 4 – reckoned favorite won and paid Rs. 34/- on Tote.

Note: Card and drawn number represent lord of ruling star and the 5^th house from the Ascendant.

• Japan Trophy : 2.40 p.m. (1400 Mts) Terms for Indian Horses

Total runners 7: 3 years old only

The Ascendant is 25° 55′ Gemini in the constellation Punarvasu of Jupiter. Jupiter, the Moon and Sun are in trine from each other in the asterism of Rahu. The Navamsa Ascendant is Taurus where Rahu is Vargottama. In Rasi, the Moon and Rahu have frontal aspects (Jaimini).

Result: 4(2) Accede, b.c. 3 won the Tote paid Rs. 15/-.

IV, V, VI Races

The Ascendant is Cancer ruled by the Moon. The Moon in Libra with directional strength transits the constellation of Swati belonging to Rahu. No planet occupies Cancer. Rahu, in the 11^th from Cancer, aspects the Ascendant. Rahu is in the constellation of Mars and Jupiter in the constellation of Rahu. Rahu partakes of the character of both Mars and Jupiter, who are lords of the 9^th and the 10^th from the Ascendant. Venus, lord of the 4^th and 10^th from the Ascendant, is the dispositor of Rahu in Taurus. Further, Venus in the constellation of Jupiter and placed in Pisces, signifies Jupiter and is capable of giving the results of Jupiter.

The 5^th house from the Ascendant is Scorpio. Mars in the 10^th is in the asterism of Ketu. Ketu is in Jyeshta in Scorpio.

Ketu in Scorpio aspects Saturn and Rahu (conventional). Jupiter has frontal aspect with Mars in Aries and by his second lateral aspect mercury in Capricorn in Rasi. He aspects Venus with first lateral aspect in Navamsa. Mercury in the constellation of Mars gives the results of Mars. Venus gives the results of Jupiter. Thus Venus and Mercury signify the 9^th and 10^th lords from the Ascendant.

Ketu, the controlling star reckoned from the ruling star, occupies the 5^th house from the Ascendant with jurisdiction over the IV, V and VI races. Ketu transits Jyeshta owned by Mercury, who is the most important planet of the day being Atmakaraka.

Short Distance Races

The 3^rd from the 5^th is Capricorn. Mercury in the constellation of Mars in Capricorn has lateral aspect with Saturn in the constellation of Moon in Taurus.

Long Distance Races

The 9^th from the 5^th is Cancer, the prime features for which have already been discussed supra.

1. Hyderabad Trophy: Div-1: 3-20 p.m.

(1200 Mts) Handicap for Horses

Total runners 10: 5 and 6 years old.

The Ascendant is Cancer 5° 01′ in the constellation Pushya. Venus, the dispositor of the Moon, is in his exaltation. Mercury as lord of the 3^rd from the Ascendant occupies the 3^rd from the 5^th and is in the constellation of inimical Mars, lord of the house controlling sport which signifies upset result.

The Navamsa Ascendant is in Gemini (Karakamsa) where both the inimical lords are posited. Mercury and Mars in frontal aspect with Saturn in Virgo interact with the Sun (Pisces). The Sun incidentally is the 3^rd lord from the Navamsa Ascendant.

Result : 1 (6) Just Do it, b.g. 5, a long shot won and paid Rs. 116 on Tote.

Note: The card no. 1 represents lord of the short distance races and the total of card and draw number equivalent to 7 (Ketu) represents the star lord of the controlling star. Further, Jupiter, dispositor of Venus in Rasi and of the Sun in Navamsa being the lord of house governing the SDR from Karakamsa produced an indirect result.

4. The Indian Turf Invitation Cup 2002 (GR-I): 4.00p.m. IST (2400 Mts) Terms for Indian Horses 4 years old only.

Total Runners 13:

The Ascendant is Cancer 14° 12′ in the constellation of Pushya. Saturn is in Rohini (Moon) in Taurus. There is no planet in the constellation of Saturn. Venus is the dispositor of Saturn. The Ascendant lord Moon is in Libra in the constellation of Rahu. Venus is the dispositor of the Moon (Libra) and of Rahu (Taurus) and is in the house of exaltation (Pisces). Venus deputizes for Jupiter being in the constellation and house of Jupiter, the 9^th lord from the Ascendant. Mars, the lord of the 5^th (Scorpio governing the sport), from the Ascendant is in the 10^th (Aries), thus gaining extraordinary strength as lord of Kendra and Kona. The Navamsa Ascendant is Pisces and the 9^th therefrom is Scorpio. Venus is the 5^th from the Navamsa Ascendant.

Result: 6 (9) The Pelican, Chg 4, a long won and paid Rs. 150/- on the Tote.

Note: Rahu, the star lord of Swati (RS) was in Taurus and Ketu, the star lord of Moola (CS) was in Scorpio. The dispositors of both these, Venus and Mars, are reflected in the card and draw number of the winner. Saturn (constellation lord of the Ascendant), Mercury (Atmakaraka), Ketu (controlling star), Mars (the constellation lord of RS and AK) – all denoting birds. Aries, Gemini and Pisces signify birds. The Navamsa Ascendant falling in Pisces denotes water birds like pelican – symbolic reaction. All the lords of stars in the core area played their part as explained above.

4. Maj P.K. Mehra Memoral Super Mole Cup (Gr-I) : 4.40 p.m. IST (1600 Mts) Terms for Indian Horses 4 years old and over

Total Runners 12 (Only one 7 year old participated).

The Ascendant is Cancer 23° 32′ in the constellation of Aslesha ruled by Mercury. Mercury, incidentally the Atmakaraka, is in the constellation of inimical Mars. The Moon, the Ascendant lord, is in Libra in the constellation of inimical Rahu. Both the waning moon and Mercury partake of the character of malefic occupying quadrants from the Ascendant. The special phenomena of Moon – Mercury interaction comes to the fore in this race. Ketu (CS) in Scorpio is in the constellation of Mercury. The 9^th from the 5^th is Cancer owned by the Moon, whose dispositor Venus (being in the constellation of Jupiter) occupies the 9^th from the Ascendant. The Navamsa Ascendant falling in Sagittarius is aspected by Mercury and Mars.

Result: 6 (5) Strength To Strength, chg – 7 won as long shot and paid Rs. 132 on the Tote.

Note: Atmakaraka in Gemini denotes sinew and strength. Lord of Karakamsa and the 5^th therefrom conjointly manifested in the card and draw number of the winner. In this race, symbolic reaction of the qualities of Atmakaraka are revealed.

VII, VIII Races

The Ascendant is Leo. The Sun is in the 7^th in the constellation of inimical Rahu, both being in cardinal houses from each other portending upset results. The Sun is in trine with Jupiter and the Moon. Sagittarius is the 5^th from the Ascendant. Jupiter is also in the constellation of Rahu.

The 3^rd from the 5^th is Aquarius. The Sun in Aquarius and the Moon in Libra (3^rd from Leo) are involved in lateral aspect (Jaimini). The Sun is the Karaka for short distance races. The 9^th from the 5^th is again Leo, owned and aspected by the Sun.

• Kolkata Trophy : 5-20 p.m. (2200 Mts) Handicap Race

Total Runners 9: No 7 year old.

The Ascendant is Leo 3° 02′ in the constellation of Ketu who is in the 4^th in the constellation of Mercury. Both Mercury and the Sun aspect (Jaimini and conventional respectively) the Ascendant. The Navamsa Ascendant is Aries. Mercury is in the constellation of Mars.

Result: 5 (1) Indian Rocket, b.g. 5 won as rank outsider paying Rs. 257/- on the Tote.

Note: Mercury as lord of the star denoting long distance races won.

VIII Hyderabd Trophy: 6-00 p.m. (1200 Mts)

Handicap for horses 5 and 6 years old Div – II.

Total runners – 11:

The Ascendant is Leo 12° 42′ in the constellation of Ketu. The Navamsa Ascendant is Cancer owned by the Moon, who is in the 3^rd as 12^th lord from the Ascendant. The Sun and Moon are in the constellation of inimical Rahu aspecting each other (lateral aspect).

Result: I (2) Annadomini, b.b. 5 won as an unreckoned and paid Rs. 97/- on the Tote.

Note: Sun is lord of the star of denoting short distance races.

Chart 2 is for Zonal Standard Time of Dubai based on Lahiri Ayanamsa and covers the period between 4.40 p.m. (ZST) and 8.10 p.m. (ZST).

Race Day: 24-3-2001, Dubai World Cup (Sixth Running) Venue ‘Nad AI Sheba’ (Dubai).

Chart 2: Rasi: Taurus – Saturn 3 and Jupiter 13; Gemini – Rahu 18; Scorpio – Mars 24; Sagittarius – Ketu 18. Aquarius – Mercury 16 and Pisces – Moon from 4 – 6, Sun 10 and Venus(R) – 19.

As per the brief resume by Anil Mukhi in The Hindu dated 31^st March 2001, there were 7 Group races in all during the hours mentioned Supra. How popular racing was in Dubai can be seen from the following statistics. The race course at Nad AI Sheba was floodlit.

1. Total amount of stake money offered crossed US $ 15 million mark – about Rs. 71 crores or 60% more than the entire stake money paid out in India in 1999 – 2000.
2. Dubai world cup is the richest race – prize money US $ 6 millions.
3. 77 of the world’s best horses from 17 countries participated in 7 Group races.

The ruling star is Uttarabhadrapada ruled by Saturn; Atmakaraka is Mars; Karakamsa is Sagittarius.

Mundane Aspects: Moon Squares Saturn 17.55 ZST.

Zodiacal Aspects: (Conventional); Saturn aspects Mars and Mercury.

Jupiter aspects Mars; Mars aspects Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter and Rahu.

Jaimini Aspects: None in Rasi in Navamsa.  Sun aspects Mercury and Venus(r) (Lateral); Moon aspects Ketu (Frontal); Jupiter aspects (Lateral) Mercury and Venus(r); Mars aspects (Frontal) Rahu and interacts with Moon in Gemini and Ketu in Virgo.

Nature of the Race Day

Saturn, the lord of ruling star (Uttarabhadra) is in the constellation of inimical Sun. The Sun lord of the controlling star (Krittika) is in the constellation of hostile Saturn, thus involved in exchange of constellations. Atmakaraka Mars is an enemy of Saturn. Mars is in the constellation of inimical Mercury in the constellation of inimical Mercury in a quadrant from him; Mars is also the lord of the 5^th (Aries) reckoned from Karakamsa (Sagittarius). All these factors indicate severe undulation in form. Mars is also known to produce red hot favorites as well as rank outsiders. On the whole, the day is a mix – up of surface and hidden form.

The Atmakaraka Mars, a malefic, is in Karakamsa, Sagittarius, signifying unpleasant happenings. Aries, the 5^th from Karakamsa is owned by Mars, which controls the sport. The Sun is placed in Aries in Navamsa and in mutual aspect with Jupiter (lord of Karakamsa) who is in the 11^th therefrom. The sun is the lord of the 9^th from Karakamsa.

The 3^rd from Aries is Gemini. Mercury is one of the planets represented by the core stars, and strongly signifies both SDR and LDR, being the constellation lord of both Mars and Venus.

To examine the races in the above light, the scheduled time of the seven races is absolutely necessary. In the absence of details like scheduled time of start of each race, distance, card and draw number of each runner etc., any exercise might be unwise and futile.

However, from the details furnished in The Hindu it was understood that in the 4^th and 6^th race, 7 year old horses won as unfancied and that the Dubai world cup was won by the favorite by name Captain Steve bearing card no. 5 and draw no. 11.

On the assumption that the race proceedings started at 4.40 p.m. ZST, the 4^th, 6^th and 7^th races were briefly examined.

Race IV

The Ascendant is Virgo, probable constellation being Uttaraphalguni owned by the Sun. The Ascendant lord Mercury is in the 6^th in Aquarius in the constellation of Rahu in the 10^th. The Sun, as the constellation lord of the Ascendant and owner of the 12^th, is in the 7^th (Maraka house) aspecting the Ascendant.

Result: Stay Gold, a – 7 year old won.
