The Rational Approach To Retrograde Planets by Dr. S.S. Gola

No hard and fast rules are available in classics regarding the interpretation of retrograde planets. Burgess who translated Surya Siddhanta mentioned “The minute classification of the phases of planet’s motion is quite gratuitous, so far Siddhanta is concerned, for the terms so given do not occur afterwards in the text.” The role of retrograde planets has been vividly explained in my book “Significant Mundane Events Through Transit Navamsa” and ‘Experiences in Horary Astrology’.  In this article we shall restrict the paper to the mundane events only.

A) A retrograde planet will reverse the present position, this is key to political predictions also. If at the time of election if a planet is retrograde, and the person concerned is in power, he will lose the power if that particular planet is retrograde in his natal chart.

B) At the time of retrogradation of Saturn there is division in the party. Similarly if any other planet is retrograde in the natal chart of the political party, there may be bifurcation in the party when that particular planet is retrograde in transit.

C) If there is already division in the party, they may unite. If someone has left the party he can come back to the party fold. He can join the other party.

It is to be noted that. The strength of the sub-sub period lord of the natal chart shall decide the events. If strength of the sub-sub period lord in transit is weak, then the inauspicious event will take place. The event will take place when: (i) A planet retrogrades. (ii)   Becomes direct, (iii) Changes the sign, (iv) Gets combust, (v) Rises from combustion. (vi) When malefics afflict benefics/ malefics.

Uttar Pradesh in India was formed on 1.11.1956 on account of reorganization of States based on language etc. The horoscope of UP state is as under. (Kindly note this author takes birth time for such an event as 00.00.01 seconds on the date of the event.)

The ascendant is Cancer. The lord is in the 3rd house together with Venus and Jupiter.  Venus is the lord of the 4th and 11th house. It amounts to a Raja yoga. Jupiter is the lord of the 6th house. It is not good. All these planets, Moon, Jupiter and Venus are aspected by Ketu and Mars. The 10th lord Mars is ill placed in the house of loss. It amounts to Dainya Yoga. As such, the person will not be able to complete his full term. There was balance of Moon as 1 year 10 months and 11 days. At the time of formation of the State the dasa was Moon/Venus/Sun up to 22.11.1956.  Sun is debilitated and is associated with Mercury who is lord of 3rd and 12th houses. Late G.B. Pant on 20-5-1952 became the Chief Minister. The first assembly elections were held on 20.5.1952.We shall discuss all the events based on Cancer ascendant. Please note that in navamsa, in the natal chart, Venus is hemmed in between malefics & thus becomes a key planet in its dasas, antars & pratyantars. Also 3^rd & 12L will always give change, kindly keep this in mind as below it would not be repeated for brevity.

Technique:

1. Note the above key planets in the natal chart of the state, and whenever someone becomes Chief Minister use that date but construct the chart with Cancer Asc only as that is the Asc of U.P state combining it with the dasa sequence of the natal chart of the state of U.P.
2. In Transit Note retrograde planets observing its rulership in the natal chart of the state.

Late Sampoornanand became Chief Minister on 10.4.1957. At that time the dasa was Moon/Ven/Rahu upto 18.5.1957. Ketu in the natal influenced the sub lord Venus. He became the Chief Minister on 10.4.1957.  The horoscope is as under.

Mars, the 10th lord is well placed in the 11th house but it is under the influence of retrograde Saturn. Mars is also under the influence of retrograde Jupiter. Both these planets indicate that he will not be able to complete his term as Chief Minister.

Jupiter sub period in the major period of Mars and sub sub period of Rahu was to end on 3.2.1961. He had to step down and Shri C.B. Gupta became Chief Minister on 7.12.1960. On 17-12-1960, Ketu 17.12 aspected Mars 23.  Mars was retrograde as the lord of the 10th house and was also in the 12th house.

Sh. Gupta became Chief Minister in the sub sub period of Rahu in the sub period of Jupiter and the main period of Mars.  When Gupta became Chief Minister, Mars the 10th lord was retrograde. Third Assembly elections were held in March and C.B. Gupta became the Chief Minister, second time, on 14.3.1962. The sub period of Mercury in the major period of Mars commenced from 12.3.1962. Mercury in the natal chart is the lord of the third and 12th house.

The planetary position on 14.3.1962 is as under.

The 10th lord Mars is posited in the 8th house which indicates that he will not be able to rule for full term, this is most important. Mer AD commenced from 12.3.1962. He had to step down in the main period of Mars, sub period of Mercury and the sub sub period of Venus. Venus in the natal chart is under the influence of Ketu, a retrograde planet.

Sucheta Kriplani after a stint with the Banaras Hindu University as lecturer, she became the first woman CM of U.P. In navamsa, in the natal chart, Venus is hemmed in between malefics. Sucheta Kriplani became Chief Minister in the sub sub period of Venus. The planetary position as on 1.10.1963 is as under.

Mars aspected its own house. But retrograde Saturn is aspecting the 10th lord Mars. Rahu 23..33 aspected Mars.  In navamsa, Ketu aspected Mars.  It indicates that she may step down before completion of the term.

4^th General Assembly elections were held in March 1967 and Sh. C.B.Gupta became Chief Minister, third time on 14.3.1967.  It was the main period of Rahu and sub period of Rahu and sub sub period of Mercury which was to end on 7.4.1967.  Mercury is the lord of the 3rd and 12th house and is associated with debilitated Sun.

The planetary position as on 14.3.1967 was as under.

The 10th house lord Mars is retrograde. Mars is in the fourth house which represents the opposition of the Chief Minister within the party. Mars and Ketu indicate some secret plot. The ascendant lord Moon is also in the 10th house and associated with Rahu. It indicates that he will not be able to rule for a longer period.

There was a split in the Congress party and Chaudhry Charan Singh formed Bhartiya Kranti Dal. He became Chief Minister on 3.4.1967.  Mercury sub sub period was to end on 7.4.1967.

The planetary position as on 3.4.1967 is as under.

The sub sub period lord Mercury is posited in the 8th house.  Mars, as the lord of the 10th house is retrograde and is associated with Ketu. The main period of Rahu. sub period of Rahu and the sub  sub period of Moon was to complete on 26.3.1968. Moon in the natal chart is aspected by Ketu and Mars, and in navamsa it is aspected by powerful Mars. President rule was imposed in UP on 25.2.1968 by the then PM/President. The planetary position is as under.

At the time of formation of the State there was Saturn and Rahu combination Retrograde Jupiter aspected the Sun and the 10th house.  Rahu sub period ended on 24.5.1968  Mercury sub sub period in the sub period of Jupiter ended on 8.6.1969.

Fifth General Assembly elections were held in the second week of February 1969. Sh C.B.Gupta became Chief Minister, third time on 26.2.1969.  The planetary position is as under.

Saturn and Rahu are together.  Jupiter is the lord of the 6th house and house of forutne.  Rahu 6.51

closely aspected Mars 7.07, the lord of the 10th house.  All these indicates that hidden reason will come to lime light at subsequent period.  He had to step down and Chaudhry Charan Singh became Chief Minister on 18.2.1970.  The planetary position is as under.

At that time Jupiter sub period was in operation. Sub sub period of Moon was in operation upto 17.4.1970.  Moon in natal chart is very weak. As such, he will not be able to rule for a longer period. President’s rule was again imposed on October 1, 1970.  It was the sub sub period of Rahu in the sub period of Jupiter and main period of Rahu.  Rahu is with Sun.it indicates some secret plot.  The sub period of Saturn commenced from 17.10.1970. On 18.10.1970 Shri T.N.Singh became Chief Minister.  The planetary position is as under.

Sun is debilitated in the 4th house and Saturn is retrograde in the 10th house.  Tenth house lord Mars is hemmed in between malefics Ketu and Sun. The sub sub period of Saturn in the sub period of Saturn was passing when he took oath. Saturn in transit is retrograde in the house of profession. Kamla Pati Tripathi became Chief Minister on 4.4.1971.  Mercury sub sub period in sub period of Saturn commenced from 30.3.1971 and ended on 25.8.1971.  Mercury in natal chart is the lord of 3rd and 12th houses.

The planetary position on 4.4.1971 is as under.

Jupiter lord of the 6th house aspected Sun, the royal planet.  Tenth lord Mars is posited in the 6th house, the house of fall.  The sub sub period of Jupiter commenced from 6.4.1973 and was operative upto 24.8.1973.  Jupiter at the time of oath ceremony was retrograde and influenced Sun, the royal planet. Ketu, aspected Sun This portends unexpected problem connected with power.  President rule was once again imposed on 12.6.1973.  The planetary position of 12.6.73 was as under.

The 10th lord Mars is well placed in the 9th house. Jupiter is posited in the 7th house and aspected Sun, the royal planet.  There is a mutual aspect of Mars and Saturn which portends unexpected problem. Jupiter was retrograde when Tripathi became Chief Minister and was also retrograde when vacated the office.

Shri Bahuguna became Chief Minister on 8.11.1973.

The planetary position on that date is as under:

Mars, the 10th lord is retrograde when Bahuguna became the Chief Minister.  It is influenced by Mercury which is also retrograde. Rahu 5.40 aspected Mars 3.47.

Sixth Assembly elections were held in the first week of March 1974 and Bahuguna was once again installed as the Chief Minister on 5.3.1974.  Main period of Rahu and the sub period of Saturn ended on 24.8.1973.  Mercury in Ketu ended on 28.2.1974.  The sub sub period of Venus was in operation in the major period of Rahu.

The planetary position on 5.3.1974 is as under:

Mars, the 10th lord was well placed in the 11th house.  Mercury was retrograde and associated with the royal planet Sun in the 8th house. Mercury, Sun and Jupiter are influenced by Ketu.  This indicates that something unexpected will happen.

President’s rule was imposed in the State on 29.11.1975.  The planetary position was as under:

Retrograde Saturn aspected the 10th house where Ketu is posited.  Retrograde Jupiter aspected the ascendant from the house of fortune.  The royal planet Sun and Mercury are aspected by retrograde Jupiter. Mars, the tenth lord is retrograde and placed in the 12 th house.

N.D. Tiwari became Chief Minister on 21.1.1976.

The planetary position is as under:

The 10th lord Mars is well placed in the 11th house.  Mercury retrograde is with Sun aspected the ascendant.  Saturn which was retrograde aspected the Sun, Mercury and the 10th house.  It is crystal clear that he may have to vacate it pre-mature. He had to step down on 30.4.1977.

India’s chart is as under:

The planetary position on 23.6.1977 is as under.

The degree of Sun is 27.59.  Rahu 28.09 transited over the natal  degree of Sun.  It also aspected Saturn 20.45.  The natal degree of Saturn is 20.34 and Saturn transited over the natal Saturn.

R.N. Yadav, Janata Party, became the Chief Minister on 23.6.1977.

Mars lord of the 10th house is very well placed in the 10th house with Venus lord of the 11th house. It amounts to a powerful Raj Yoga. There is influence of Saturn on the 10th house and Mars. Thus there is mutual aspect of Mars and Saturn. Saturn is the lord of the opposition of the Chief Minister. At that time

according to natal chart of UP the sub sub period of Venus in the sub period of Venus and the main period of  Venus  was to end on 30.9.1977.  Venus in natal chart is placed in the 3rd house and aspected by Ketu and Mars. He continued to be Chief Minister upto 27.2.1979.  At that time sub sub period in the sub period of Venus and main period of Rahu operated upto 30.3.1979.

Shri Banarsi Dass became Chief Minister on 27.2.1979 after the split in Janata Party.  The planetary position as on 27.2.1979 is as under:

The 10th lord Mars is posited in the 6th house with Ketu.  It is not a good sign.  Jupiter (R) aspected the house of fortune and Saturn was also retrograde.  All these indicates that he will not be able to rule for a longer period.

There was Seventh General Election in the first week of June 1980. VP Singh became Chief Minister on 9.6.1980.  The planetary position is as under:

In the 10th house the planet of change is posited.   Mars 20.09 associated Saturn 26.53.  Saturn is the lord of the house of opposition and it was with Mars.  It indicates too much bickerings.  This shortens the life span of the tenure of Chief Minister.

If we look at the country’s chart, it is observed that Ketu 28.30 transited the degree of Sun which is 27.59.  Ketu 28.30 also aspected the Sun.
