Success of a prediction depends on the accuracy of Lagna Sphuta. If the Lagna Sphuta is accurate then the Varga Kundalis (Divisional charts) made from this will also be accurate and so will be the prediction made from them. Lagna Sphuta means Rasi-Degree-Minute, etc. of a Lagna. Its accuracy depends upon the precision of native’s birth time and latitude, longitude, etc. of place of his birth. An astrologer should be satisfied only if precision in birth time is of a ‘minute’ and that of Lagna and Planets is of minutes of a degree. The effort of making Lagna and Planets positions till seconds or minute even finer is useless. The same effort, instead should be put into rectifying the Lagna Sphuta purer (accuracy). Many theories for test of its purity (accuracy) can be found in scriptures. One of the reliable and useful method among them is “Kunda Siddhanta”. Its description is in the fifth chapter of Prasna Marg in 8-9th verse. Although the name of book is Prasna Marg and it is written only to give prediction by query, but the rules described in this are fully applicable also to Lagna Kundli at birth. The verse related to Kunda Siddhant is as follow –
First of all, convert the Sign, Degree-minutes etc. of Lagna Sphuta into Degree-minutes. Multiply it by 81. The Degree- minutes etc. obtained on multiplication show the birth Nakshatra or trinal Nakshatra – 10th (Anujanma) 19th (Trijanma). (Refer Trikona Nakshatra Table) If the number is bigger than 360 then divide it by 360. The remainder obtained on division in form of Degree-minutes shows the Nakshatra. If this number does not indicate the birth Nakshatra or a Nakshatra trinal to it then increase or decrease the Lagna Sphuta by 10 minutes per Nakshatra, and repeat the above calculation so that the birth Nakshatra or its trinal Nakshatra is obtained. The Lagna Sphuta obtained in this way is accurate. The time to which this Lagna Sphuta belongs is the accurate time of birth. In this way, accurate time of birth and the accurate Lagna Sphuta at that time is obtained. This rule is to be applied only when the actual time of birth is precisely known. Let us make this clear by an example: –
Trikona Nakshatra Table | |||||
Nakshatra | Extent (Degree/

Nakshatra | Extent (Degree/

Nakshatra | Extent (Degree/

Ashwini | 0 to 13/20 | Magha | 120/00 to 133/20 | Mula | 240/00 to 253/20 |
Bharani | 13/20 to 26/40 | Pu. Pha. | 133/20 to 146/40 | Purvashadha | 253/20 to 266/40 |
Kruttika | 26/40 to 40/00 | Ut. Pha. | 146/40 to 160/00 | Uttarashadha | 266/40 to 280/00 |
Rohini | 40/00 to 53/20 | Hasta | 160/00 to 173/20 | Sharavan | 280/00 to 293/20 |

Punarvasu | 80/00 to 93/20 | Vishaka | 200/00 to 213/20 | Pu.Bha. | 320/00 to 333/20 |
Pushya | 93/20 to 106/40 | Anuradha | 213/20 to 226/40 | U.Bha. | 333/20 to 346/40 |
Ashlesha | 106/40 to 120/00 | Jyestha | 226/40 to 240/00 | Revati |
346/40 to 360/00 |
Ashwini, Magha and Mula are mutually trinal Nakshatras. If birth is in Ashwini and by calculation any of the Ashwini, Magha or Mula Nakshatra is obtained then the Lagna Sphuta will be considered to be accurate. Similarly, understand for other trinal Nakshatra.
Example
Native was born on 11 October 1987 at 3:50 in morning at Bombay (Goregaon). Its Latitude is 19|10 North and Longitude is 72|50 East. Ayanamsa Chitra Paksha 23/41/9. Rohini Nakshatra at birth time. Lagna position 4/14/27. Changing it into Degree-minutes Lagna Sphuta becomes 134o27’. Multiplying this by 81 gives 10890o27’. This number is bigger than 360, hence dividing it by 360 gives 90o27’ as remainder, This number is of Punarvasu Nakshatra . Sincethe birth Nakshatra is Rohini and the Nakshatra obtained by calculation is Punarvasu which is three Nakshatra more, Therefore for three Nakshatras( 10 minutes per Nakshatra)30 minutes are obtained. Subtracting it from Lagna Sphuta 134o27’ gives 133o57’ as the accurate Lagna Sphuta. On multiplying it by 81, the number 10849o57’ is obtained. It is bigger than 360 hence dividing it by 360 give 49o57’ as remainder. This number indicates Rohini Nakshatra which is the native’s birth Nakshatra. Hence the Lagna Sphuta 133o57’ matches the given rule. Hence the accurate Lagna comes out to be 4/13/57.
Note: The chart was generated using Jhora and the ayanamsa was adjusted to the one mentioned by the author. The actual Longitude of Lagna comes to 14 Le 27’ 43.01 which gets rounded up while copying the chart.
This Lagna is less by 30 minutes of a degree from the original Lagna obtained at the time of 3 hours 50 minutes. Hence for obtaining accurate birth time we have to reduce the given birth time by the time in which Lagna moves by 30 minutes.
On an average, in a time of 1 minute, Lagna moves by 15 minutes of a degree. Hence the difference of 30 minutes of a degree will be 2 minutes of time. Subtracting it from the given birth time gives 3 hours 48 minutes as the accurate birth time of native and the accurate Lagna Sphuta is 4/13/57.
