Lakshmi Puja on Diwali: Two Simple Remedies to Welcome Prosperity Into Your Home

Every Diwali, millions of homes light up with diyas, rangoli and the quiet hope that Goddess Lakshmi will step inside. In Hindu tradition she represents wealth, abundance and well-being, and Lakshmi Puja is the evening when families invite her with devotion. The festival also reminds us that her blessings are said to stay where there is cleanliness, light, gratitude and generosity.

5 Interesting Facts About Diwali

1. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit “Deepavali”, which means a row of lamps.
2. Diwali is a five-day festival: Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi, Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. Lakshmi Puja falls on the third day, which is the main night.
3. Lakshmi Puja is held on Amavasya, the new moon night, when the sky is at its darkest. This is why lamps carry such deep meaning on this night.
4. According to the Puranas, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) holding a lotus, which is why the lotus is dear to her.
5. Diwali is celebrated for different reasons across traditions. In much of North India it marks Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya, in parts of South India it is linked to the victory over Narakasura, and Jains and Sikhs observe it in connection with Lord Mahavira and Bandi Chhor Divas respectively.

What Makes Lakshmi Pujan Special

Lakshmi Pujan has its own charm and customs. The puja is traditionally performed in the evening after sunset, during the auspicious Pradosh Kaal, when families gather together at home. Lord Ganesha is worshipped along with Goddess Lakshmi, because he is invoked first to remove obstacles and bring wisdom along with wealth. Many families draw rangoli at the entrance and keep the main door open, as a sign of welcome to the Goddess. Business families often perform Chopda Pujan on this day, worshipping their new account books and beginning the new financial year with prayers. Lamps are kept burning through the night, so the home stays bright and welcoming.

Preparing for Lakshmi Puja

A little preparation makes the puja feel more meaningful. Clean your home well and prepare a small puja area with an image or idol of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. Light a diya, offer flowers, fruits and sweets, and chant “Om Mahalakshmyai Namah”. Conclude with Aarti and a prayer for peace, happiness and prosperity. Follow your family’s customary rituals and the local muhurta for the puja.

Along with the main puja, many families also follow simple remedies at home. Here are two that are easy to do and need nothing more than a clean space and a sincere mind.

Upay 1: Evening Lamp and 108 Beej Mantra Remedy

To welcome Goddess Lakshmi into a clean, bright home

1. Clean your house well before sunset and mop the area around the main door.
2. Wash your hands and feet and wear clean clothes.
3. Light a ghee lamp at the main door or in front of Goddess Lakshmi’s picture.
4. Sit quietly on a mat and chant this beej mantra 108 times:
5. Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah
6. Offer mishri or a sweet as bhog, fold your hands and make your prayer. Then share the prasad with everyone at home.

A clean threshold and a lit lamp are traditionally seen as a welcome to Goddess Lakshmi, and the 108 repetitions of the beej mantra bring calm and focus to the evening.

Upay 2: Friday Kheer Offering and Charity Remedy

For steady prosperity and blessings in the home

Friday is considered especially auspicious for Goddess Lakshmi, which is why this remedy is done on a Friday evening.

1. Keep your house clean and light a ghee lamp in front of Goddess Lakshmi.
2. Make a small portion of kheer with milk, rice and sugar.
3. Offer a lotus or a rose along with the kheer as bhog.
4. Fold your hands and chant “Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah” 11 times.
5. Share the prasad with your family first. Then feed a young girl or someone in need with the kheer or any sweet.

The final step matters most. Sharing food with others is an old way of showing gratitude for what we have, and it keeps the spirit of giving at the centre of the remedy.

Conclusion

Lakshmi Puja is a chance to pause, express gratitude and begin the new year with positive intentions. These remedies are matters of faith and tradition, not guaranteed financial outcomes. Along with prayer, honest work, responsible financial decisions and generosity remain the strongest foundations for long-term well-being. Remedies done with faith and a clean mind work best. 🙏
