Each planet rules the relevant years of life and this planet is called Ruler of Band of years. This concept has been given in Lal Kitab.

During particular band of years when ruler planet progresses in the natal chart it may show possibilities of happening of events by establishing relations in various ways as given below.

This concept of application of progression is novel and brilliant attempt made by eminent astrologer Shri. Dinesh S. Mathur in one of his masterpieces “Vedic Progression- Secrets of Bhrigu Samhita and Nadi Granthas Unveiled” (Sagar Publications, Edition 2007) available in Saptarishis Astrology Online Book shop

http://shop.saptarishisastrology.com . In this book the author has described various methods of Vedic Progression.

Here I am trying to apply one of his method i.e. Progression of Ruler of band of years on some charts. All the methods of calculation and interpretation are as per Shri Mathur has mentioned in his book.

The table of band of years is given as follows:

In this table we can see that each planet remains operational for specific years after birth and for that range of duration of years this planet is called ruler of band of years, e.g. Jupiter is operational for six years covering 16^th – 21^st, 51^st – 56^th and 86^th – 91^st band of years of life. So Jupiter is called as ruler of 16^th – 21^st, 51^st – 56^th and 86^th – 91^st band of years of life. Like that Sun is the ruler of 22^nd – 23^rd, 57^th – 58^th, and 92^nd – 93^rd band of years of life and so on.

Progression of Ruler of Band of Years

When a particular band of years starts then the ruler of that particular band of years starts its progression in the natal chart from its natal position and after travelling through various signs it returns to its natal position from where it has started in the end of that particular band of years , e.g. when any native enters in to 25^th year i.e. when he/she has completed 24^th year and 25^th year starts then Band Of Years 25^th – 27^th starts and as ruler of this band of years Venus starts its progression in the natal chart from its natal position. Venus will travel in various signs for 3 years and at the end of 27^th year return to its natal position. Here we have to take care about progressive/regressive nature of planet in the natal chart. If ruler of band of years is regressive in the natal chart then it will move backwards from its natal position otherwise it will move forward. Rahu and Ketu are always regressive so during their band of years they always move backwards. Sun and Moon are always progressive so during their band of years they always move forwards. Rest of the planets may be progressive or regressive in nature in the natal chart.

The following table shows duration of stay of ruler of band of years in the sign which is dependent upon length of the band:

Principles of Calculation of Progression of Ruler of Band of Years

1. For the calculation of progression of ruler of band of years first calculate the running age of the native and choose the running band of years. Then locate the position of ruler of running band of years in the natal chart.
2. Check whether the ruler of running band of years is direct in motion or retrograde in the natal A planet in direct motion or retrograde motion in the natal chart will always be in direct motion or retrograde motion in progression.
3. The ruler of band of years if in direct motion will start its progression from its natal position as that band of years starts and travel the remaining degrees of its natal sign to reach next sign. For example if any ruler of band of years is at 10⁰ in Leo sign and is in direct motion , then as its band of years starts it covers remaining 20⁰ of Leo sign and then enters in to next sign i.e. Virgo and then into Libra and so on.
4. If the ruler of band of years is retrograde then it moves backwards to reach previous In above example if same ruler planet is at 10⁰ in Leo sign but is retrograde then it moves back and first it will cover 10⁰ of Leo sign and then enters Cancer sign and then to Gemini etc..
5. Here we calculate the progression of ruler of band of years in a native who is running 44^th His date of birth is 21 June 1970. So he has completed 43 years of his life on 21 June 2013 and entered into 44^th year. In Table I we can see that he comes under 42^nd – 47^th band of years and the ruler planet is Rahu. Rahu is at 10⁰ in Aquarius and is retrograde. The progression of Rahu in retrograde motion started when native completed his 41^st year and entered in to 42^nd year on 21 June 2011 and it will progress in retrograde motion for 6 years when native completes its 47^th year on 21 June 2017. On this date Rahu will return back to its natal position.

In Table II we know Rahu takes 6.088 days to travel over a degree, so days taken by Rahu to travel 10⁰ would be = 10⁰ X 6.088 = 60.88 days.

So Rahu took 60.88 days to move backwards starting from 21 June 2011 to reach next sign i.e. Capricorn. After that Rahu spends 6 months (182.63 days) in each sign till it reaches the junction of Pisces and Aquarius and then after entering Aquarius it covers rest 20⁰ (from 30⁰ to 10⁰) to reach its natal position on 21-June 2017 which is calculated in terms of days by multiplying 20⁰ in to 6.088 which comes out to be 121days. So Rahu takes 121 days to reach its natal position after entering Aquarius from Pisces. Thus the progression of Rahu as ruler of band of years (42nd – 47^th) ends on 21 June 2017.

Following is the table showing Rahu stay in each sign with date range: Rahu progression as ruler of band of years (42^nd – 47^th): 21 June 2011 to 21 June 2017.

Now I am giving another example of calculation and interpretation of progression of ruler of band of years. This is a horoscope of a male Doctor who is presently working in Multi National Company. Some of the important events of his life are as follow:

On 23 April 2002 the native was running 30^th year and he was running band of years 28^th – 33^rd and Mars was the ruler.

First we convert 52’ in to degrees. 52/60= .86⁰. Now we add it to 8⁰ to make it 8.86⁰. So 8⁰:52’= 8.86⁰ . Mars as ruler of band would start its journey on 4 Oct 1999 from 8.86⁰ till 30⁰ in Virgo sign. So the degrees covered by Mars would be 30⁰ – 8.86⁰ = 21.14⁰.  In Table II we know Mars takes 6.088 days to cover 1⁰ so days taken by Mars to cover 21.14⁰ would be

6.088 X 21.14⁰ = 128.7 days

So Mars started its progression on 4-Oct-1999 and took 128.7 days to complete its journey in Virgo sign and reached next sign Libra. Now it would take 6 months (182.63 days) in all other signs. Then after it finished its journey in Leo sign and reached again to Virgo sign, it would cover its 8.86⁰ (8.86⁰ X 6.088 = 53.9 days) and reach its natal position on 4^th Oct 2005. Let’s tabulate the progression of Mars.

Interpretation of Progression of Ruler of the Band of Years

Sri D. S. Mathur in his book has mentioned that “first examine whether the ruler of band of years is inclined to cause the event. In case it is not so inclined, its progression at that time will not yield the desired result.” The rules of examination as mentioned by him are as follow-

After examination if the ruler of band of years is inclined to give the result, then we can examine the progression of the ruler of band of years in each sign according to the above given four rules.

We can test these rules in the above given horoscope of Native 1. He was married in the band of years 28^th-33^rd when Mars was ruler. So first test whether Mars as ruler was inclined to cause marriage. As mentioned by Sri D. S. Mathur for the event of marriage of a male person ruler of band of years should be related to Karaka- natal Venus (in case of female the Karaka of marriage becomes Jupiter). Also this ruler should be related at same time to the Karaka of fulfillment of wish or gain i.e. Jupiter.

So in this manner Mars as ruler of band of years is related to Karakas and its relevant houses of wife and gain. So Mars is inclined to cause gain of wife. Now we examine the progression of Mars to cause Marriage. Again the progressed Mars is examined as given above. The native was married on 23 April 2002. At that time progressed Mars as ruler of band of years was in Aquarius. Let us examine all four points:

In this manner when Progressed Mars became related to Karakas and relevant houses then the event happened.

Let us examine another event of same native. He gained job on 27 Sep 2004. We first examine the inclination of Mars as band of ruler in chart of Native 1 to gain him a job.

So Mars as ruler of band of years was inclined to gain him a job. He joined a prestigious Indian multinational pharmaceutical company as Medical Advisor on 27 Sep 2004. At that time progressed Mars was in Cancer. Let us examine it in Cancer.

In this manner Progressed ruler is examined in relation to any event.

Horoscope of Prof. B. V. Raman

Now we examine some important events of eminent astrologer Prof. B.V. Raman. His horoscope and important events are given below:

First we take date of marriage 30-Oct-1930.At that time he was running 19^th year, so the ruler of band of year will be Jupiter (16^th-21^st year). So Jupiter was a ruler of Band from 8 Aug 1927 to 8 Aug 1933 and it progressed in the chart and by making relations with various Karakas and planets it resulted various events in his life. During this band of years he was married and this is shown below that how progressed ruler of Band i.e. Jupiter resulted this important event of life.

The degrees of Jupiter is 12⁰:58’. First we convert 58’ to degrees i.e. we divide 58 by 60 which comes out to be .97. Then we add it to 12⁰ which becomes 12:97⁰ Jupiter as ruler of band started progressing after native completed 15^th year and entered 16^th year on 8 Aug 1927 in sign Scorpio. Jupiter travelled rest of degrees in Scorpio and other signs for six years which is calculated as follow. We know

We know total degrees of a sign is 30⁰ so Jupiter travelled 17.03⁰ (30⁰ – 12.97⁰ =17.03⁰) .We convert this remaining degree in to days by multiplying it with 6.088days= 17.03⁰ X 6.088= 103.678days. So Progressed Jupiter (JupiterPr) travelled for 103.678 days to cover Scorpio sign and then entered in to Sagittarius. So we add 103.678 days to 8 Aug 1927 to come to date 22 Nov 1927 when JupiterPr completed its journey in Scorpio sign and entered in to next sign Sagittarius. In Sagittarius JupiterPr remained for 6 months (182.63 days) and then entered in to next sign Capricorn where again it remained for 6 months (182.63 days ) and entered in to next sign Aquarius and so on. As it completed its stay in Libra and entered into Scorpio, it covered remaining 12.97⁰ in it which is converted into days by multiplying it with 6.088days= 12.97⁰ X 6.088= 78.96 days. So it covered last 78.96 days of its progression cycle in Scorpio.

The progression of Jupiter as ruler of Band is given as follow:

Interpretation of the Event

The native married on 30-October-1930. At that time the Progressed Jupiter (JupiterPr) was in Taurus (22 May 1930 to 22 Nov 1930). Here JupiterPr was over natal Saturn and natal Moon. For the event marriage the progressing/regressing ruler of band of years should be related to:

So for the given above event (marriage) in the horoscope of Prof. B. V. Raman we write the planets/houses for the above four points in the table:

But, as mentioned above first we examine whether Ruler of band of years Jupiter was inclined to produce major events during its progression. For this we relate natal Jupiter to Karakas of marriage and gain along with relevant houses.

So we can say that Jupiter as ruler of band of years was inclined to give this major event of his life.

Now we relate Progressed Jupiter (JupiterPr) in Taurus to all these four points with explanation.

In this manner when the ruler of band of years gets related to relevant Karaka and relevant houses simultaneously, then the possibility of event can be expected. Next this progressed

Jupiter should be examined simultaneously with Karaka of gain and relevant houses.

So in this manner Progressed Jupiter in Taurus developed contacts with Karakas of marriage and gain and relevant houses and resulted event.

Now we come to next event in Prof. B. V. Raman’s life i.e. birth of his first son.

Date of Birth of first son: – 2-November-1935.

At that time he was running 24^th year (He completed 23 years on 8 Aug1935 and 24^th year started) and Moon is the ruler of band of 24^th year.

Now we show the dates of progressing Moon in all signs in following Table (Duration = 8 Aug 1935 to 8 Aug 1936):

Interpretation of the Event

The native was blessed with son on 2-November-1935. At that time progressing ruler of band of years i.e. MoonPr was in Leo. In Leo MoonPr was over natal Mars, Mercury and Venus.

For the event birth of issue the progressing/regressing ruler of band of years should be related to:

So for the given above event (birth of issue) in the horoscope of Prof. B. V. Raman we write the planets/houses for the above four points in the table:

Again we first examine the inclination of Moon to result such event.

So we can say that Moon as ruler of band of years was inclined to give this major event of his life.

Now we relate MoonPr in Leo to all these four points with explanation.

Thus Moon as ruler of band of years during progression when related to all four points resulted in event i.e. birth of issue.

Horoscope of Queen Elizabeth

Now we apply these methods on the horoscope of Queen Elizabeth.

The events of life of Queen Elizabeth to be discussed are:

Marriage and Birth of Issue

The ruler of band of years of 22^nd-23^rd is Sun. So this band covered two events of her life.

Now we show the dates of Sun in all signs in following Table (Duration = 21-Apr-1947 to 21-Apr-1949):

First we examine whether Ruler of band of years Sun was inclined to produce major events during its progression. For this we relate natal Sun to Karakas of marriage, birth of issue and gain along with relevant houses.

In this manner ruler of band of years Sun while in progression in different signs caused two major events in the life of Queen Elizabeth.

Coronation of Queen Elizabeth

Let us now discuss the greatest event in Queen Elizabeth’s life i.e. The Coronation of Queen. The date of coronation was 2^nd June 1953 when Queen was running 28^th year of her life.

The ruler of band of years of 28^th -33^rd is Mars. So this band covered this event of her life.

First we check the inclination of Mars. For achievement of this position Mars should be related to Karaka of self, position and gain along with relevant houses.

Horoscope of John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy was former USA president who killed by sniper on 22 Nov 1963. We will examine his chart according to ruler of band of years.

As mentioned by Sri D. S. Mathur “Death takes place when longevity is exhausted by injury to body and body dissolves in to its constituent elements”. Sun is the Karaka of self and first house from it, its Arudha, and first house from ascendant represents self or body. Like that Mars is the Karaka of injury and sixth house from it, its Arudha and sixth house from ascendant represents injury. Also Saturn is the Karaka of longevity and eight house from it, its Arudha and eight house from ascendant represents longevity. In the last Saturn is again the Karaka of exhaustion or depletion or loss and 12^th house from it, its Arudha and 12^th house from ascendant represents exhaustion or depletion or loss.

For the death by murder or injury the ruler of band of years should be related to:-

1. Karaka of self and relevant houses
2. Karaka of injury and relevant houses
3. Karaka of longevity and relevant houses
4. Karaka of exhaustion and relevant houses

The ruler of band of years of 42^nd -47^th is Rahu. Calculation of regression of Rahu is as follow:

Now we discuss the horoscope of Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India. We will discuss three events of his life, two of which happened under same ruler of band of years and other was covered under another ruler.

Rajiv Gandhi was running band of years 36^th – 41^st and Saturn was the ruler when two events happened in his life (loss of mother due to death and becoming Prime Minister).

The ruler of band of years of 36^th – 41^st is Saturn. So this band covered two major events of his life.

Now we show the dates of Progressing Saturn in all signs in following Table (Duration = 20-Aug-1979 to 20-Aug-1985):

First we check the inclination of Saturn to cause loss of mother due to death. For this Saturn should be related to Karaka of mother, Karaka of loss, Karaka of death and relevant houses.

So Saturn had the   inclination to cause loss of mother due to death. Let us examine progression of Saturn which was in Aries when such untoward incident happened.

Due to such untoward incidence, in order to maintain law and order of biggest democracy of the world the ruling party selected Rajiv Gandhi to take oath as Prime Minister. Same date Rajiv Gandhi took oath as Prime Minister, so we also examine progression of Saturn as ruler of band of years in resulting this event. First we examine inclination of Saturn as follow:

Now we discuss the unfortunate incident of Indian Politics i.e. assassination of Rajiv Gandhi which happened on 21 May 1991. He was running 47^th year so band of years was 42^nd – 47^th whose ruler is Rahu.

The ruler of band of years of 42^nd -47^th is Rahu. Calculation of regression of Rahu is as follow:

In this manner this method can be used to confirm the predictions which other methods of predictions are hinting.
