Chara Dasa – A Novel Exposition by Iranganti Rangacharya

Ayur Dasas (timing longevity) and Phalita Dasas (timing events) are the two categories of the system of Jaimini Dasas, dealt by the commentators of Jaimini Sutras. Specific findings for each category of Dasas and for each Dasa of the same category are hinted for the correct fruition of Dasa results. Hence there could be no use of mixing the findings of the both, nor would it be fruitful to attempt the several different findings from the one and the same Dasa.

Chara Dasa is essentially a Phalita Dasa (timing events) which I would like to unveil together with specific clues for the presage of Dasa findings, and illustrate the points in the following horoscopic charts. This novel exposition of mine is based on the Sanskrit verse-commentary of Nrisimha Suri and Sanskrit Bhashya of Raghavabhatta.

Specific Clues:

1. Libra, Taurus, Cancer, Pisces, Sagittarius, Virgo and Gemini Dasa give benefic results. Marriage, getting a job or promotion in job and such other auspicious things are possible in the above-mentioned Dasas. The best of the Dasas is Gemini in the order shown above.
2. Leo, Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius Dasas give evil results. Aquarius is the worst of all in the order. Financial worries, litigations, troubles in job like suspensions, frequent transfers etc., insomnia, breaks in educational career, grief due

to the death of a parent, are probable in the above Dasas.

3. Dasa of Scorpio is troublesome, till the period of Antardasa sign occupied by Ketu.

4. Dasa of Capricorn causes anxieties either in beginning or at the end.
5. Dasa of a sign occupied by Rahu causes troubles related to job, buildings or lands. The native may be deprived of his house by any forced means. He may go to a distant place or he may be away from his parents or from his native place.
6. Dasa of Aquarius occupied by Rahu does well to the native. He may be abroad and make his earnings.
7. Dasa of Scorpio occupied by Ketu is beneficent to the native in matters of marriage, job, etc.
8. Dasas of the 6^th, the 8^th, and the 12^th signs from birth ascendant are generally bad.
9. Dasa of the sign occupied by Ketu is good for benefic results.
10. If both the Moon and Venus occupy the 2nd of the Dasa sign, the native gets fabulous wealth or may have bright educational career.
11. If both the Moon and Venus occupy the 12th of Dasa sign, the native may lose all his wealth.
12. If Rahu is in the 2nd of Dasa sign, the native will be deprived of his wealth or spends away his money for bad ends.
13. If Rahu is in the 12th of Dasa sign, troubles belonging to job like suspensions, demotions and such punishments may be possible, occasioning loss of money.
14. If Mars and Ketu are associated in the 12th of Dasa sign, fire accident may be apprehended.
15. If a Dasa sign is hemmed between two malefic in the 2nd and in the 12th, Badhaka Yoga is probable. If that Dasa sign is also occupied by a malefic, the native certainly meets with a fatal accident, may be imprisoned, or may be killed.
16. The event of marriage can be timed in
    • Dasa Antardasa of the sign occupied by Darakaraka, Ketu, Venus;
    • In the 7th of birth ascendant or Arudha Lagna;
    • In the 7th of the sign occupied by Atmakaraka;
    • In Upapada Dasa;
    • In the 2nd of Upapada; and
    • In Darapada Dasa.
17. The event of getting a job or promotion is probable (1) In the Dasa sign occupied by the Sun or Venus, or by both; (2) In the Dasa sign whose 5th or 9th sign is occupied or aspected by Venus, Jupiter or the Moon; (3) In the Dasa of the 10th sign, occupied or aspected by benefics, or own, or exalted planets; and (4) In the Dasa sign whose 10th sign is occupied or aspected by benefics.
18. If the above-mentioned are connected with debilitated or malefic planets, transfers or troubles in job may be predicted.

Let me illustrate the points in the female horoscope (Chart-1) of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, who was assassinated on 31st October, 1984.

Her birth Ascendant is Cancer which is also her Arudha Lagna. Saturn is her Atmakaraka and the Moon is her Darakaraka. Cancer is also Dara Pada or Kalatra Arudha.

Reckoning Chara Dasa (in female horoscope):

It begins from the 4th sign of the birth ascendant by direct count if birth ascendant is odd or by reverse count if the birth ascendant is even. But Dasas run from the 4th sign direct if that 4th sign is even, reverse if that sign is odd.

Hence Dasas begin from Aries, the 4th sign of Cancer, by reverse count. So Dasas from Aries reversely are Aries, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Libra, Virgo, Leo, Cancer, Gemini, and Taurus.  Dasa period are to be counted from Dasa sign lord to Dasa sign and subtract one year from the count to get the number of years of that Dasa sign. The count should be direct for odd signs and reverse for the even signs. Dasa sign gets 10 years if its lord is in its 7th sign.

Hence Dasa periods here are 8, 2, 7, 10, 7, 9, 10, 2, 9, 10, 7, 7 years respectively of the above-mentioned Dasas.

Dasa of Capricorn begins from 19-11-1934 for 10 years. In the beginning of this Capricorn Dasa, grief due to her mother’s death in 1936 was experienced. This sad event can be timed only from the connected Ayur Dasa which should be dealt separately. Her marriage happened in this Capricorn Dasa on 26.3.1942. Please see the specific clue mentioned before. Capricorn is the 7th of the birth ascendant and Arudha Lagna. It is the 7th of the sign occupied by Atmakaraka, Saturn. Capricorn is also occupied by Darakaraka and Dasa karaka of Kalatrabhava, viz., the Moon. Marriage took place in its Antardasa, Taurus which is the 2nd sign of Upapada, Aries. She became the President of the Indian National Congress in the period of Scorpio after its Antardasa of the sign Gemini occupied by Ketu in 1959. Rajayoga is bestowed in the period of Libra to become the Premier of our country. Libra is a benefic sign, the 10th from the birth Ascendant, Cancer, and aspected by benefic Jupiter. Libra is also the 10th from Arudha Lagna and from Atmakaraka. The malefic feature is the aspect of Mars and has redemption as Mars is the lord of the 7th from Libra Dasa sign. Her power continued till her end of her life in Cancer Dasa, with a short period of interruption i.e., Dasa of Leo occupied by a malefic Mars. Cancer, her birth Ascendant, is occupied by malefic Atmakaraka Saturn and is hemmed in between two malefic, Mars and Ketu, in the 2nd and the 12th signs. This itself is a clear indication of the tragic event in Dasa of Cancer.

Chart-2 belongs to Mr. N.T. Rama Rao, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. His birth Ascendant is Libra.

Reckoning is from Chara Dasa for a male chart; Chara Dasa commences from birth Ascendant only. Dasas run from the birth Ascendant directly if the birth Ascendant is an odd sign and regular if it is a cardinal sign (every 6th if fixed, and the 1st, 5th, 9th is dual). Dasas run from the birth Ascendant reversely if the birth Ascendant is an odd sign is an even sign (regular if cardinal, every 6^th is fixed, and 1^st. 5^th and 9^th if dual).

Here birth Ascendant is Libra which is an odd and cardinal sign. Hence, Dasas are Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, and Virgo. Dasa periods are to be counted from Dasa sign lord to Dasa sign, direct if Dasa sign lord is an odd sign or reverse if Dasa sign lord is an even sign.

Hence Dasa periods are 7, 6, 3, 9, 8, 6, 11, 2, 12, 10, 10, 10, 9 years respectively of the above-mentioned Dasas.

Mr. N.T.R. became the Chief Minister in the period of Gemini; the best benefic sign whose 5^th house Libra is occupied by Jupiter and the Moon. This Gemini Dasa is from 28.5.1975 to 28.5.1987. The next Dasa is Cancer which is hemmed in between two malefics Mars and Rahu in the 12th and the 2nd signs. This is a troublesome period, causing Bandhaa Yoga.

According to Neelakantta’s method known to the readers interested in Jaimini from the Studies in Jaimini Astrology of Dr. RAMAN, Gemini Dasa is from 28.5.1973 to 28.5.1984. This method also is proved valid with regard to Gemini Dasa, which made him Chief Minister. The next Cancer Dasa in its own Antardasa for nine months, the Antardasa of Gemini is good. Antardasa of Taurus for nine months from November 1985 to August 1986 is not favorable.  Next Aries Antardasa is good. Pisces again poses problems.

According to the method given by me, Cancer Dasa of four years which begins from 28.5.1987 is however a troublesome period.

Conclusions:

Selection of Dasa proper to a horoscope is as difficult as the selection of the proper drug in Homeopathy.

For a female horoscope, the method given in this article may be used. I am sure predictions do not fail if judged based on the specific clues given. For male horoscopes, the method given in this article or Neelakantta’s method known from “Studies in Jaimini Astrology” may be attempted. It is advisable to apply Chara Dasa for the birth Ascendants that are cardinal (chara), if Neelakantta’s method is selected.
